What is the speaker header for on my motherboard?

Okay so my case comes with a speaker which I recently mended (the wire ripped). Now when I plug it into the speaker header on my mobo it makes a beep whenever starting my pc. I used to think that was a feature built into the case itself. So what does this speaker do and what is it for? Is that beep to let me know it works?

Thanks!

It's only purpose is to tell you when your board posts. You usually use them when you are first building your rig and you build it outside the case and you don't have a monitor to see the video output your board or GPU is outputting.

the beep is normal ,  it basically  acknowledges that the Board is posting,  if you start hearing multiple  beep codes and things don't seem right ,,, it basically telling you that theres an error  somewhere in the hardware. audible warning system.  but one beep, thats jsut a post beep,
