Because I am very lazy can you help please

Sorry to ask but as it’s well lazy, but as I know nothing about this and I bow down to your wisdom...

I donate money to charity, and was thinking I really like the idea of folding@home as I would be personally sort of doing something to help…

Please can you help me build a folding rig and its only job will to fold (part of the Linus team) 24h 365 days a year…

Please suggest what parts will be best and give me some options…

Budget £2000

Parts I have lying around…

Half XB Case

Coolermaster 550 Case

Loads of hard drives etc…

H100i

FX8350

2 X HD7850

Thanks In advance…

Wow that's very generous of you. I'm not an expert on folding so I'll let someone else suggest what's best but big thumbs up to you.

you already have the essentials like the CPU and GPU so all you really need is like RAM and a power supply. RAM just get the cheapest that you can since Folding doesn't use RAM and for power supply I would go with a 750-850w to power the GPU. Oh almost forgot a motherboard also. So here is the list

Motherboard: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-ga990fxaud3

Ram: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/crucial-memory-bls2kit4g3d1339ds1s00

Power supply: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-x850

Don't think I'm missing something but I might have (just woke up from a nap).

CPU: Intel core i5 3570 Motherboard: Gigabyte-H77-DS3H Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB  GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB  PSU: Seasonic G Series 550W

Thanks so that leaves a chuck of cash, would it be better to build a second folding rig or sell parts and build one super rig?

you can probably make a rig from those left over parts and then make another rig. If electricity isn't a problems I would make another folding rig after the spare parts rig and start a farm and climb the ladder.

Right done some reading, what about a farm

I can put this in a serviced office, so wont be paying any electric lol

Whats the best cpu & gpu combination? For second rig it can be the basis for a farm, will build a custom rack so I can keep adding to it... but whats the best bang for buck?

Basically multiple computers you're using to fold is a farm. And since you're not paying for electicity I would go ahead and make another dedicated folding rig, Should make sure that you can keep it there since folding draws more power and produces a good amount of heat.

Unless you have a 4p folder, GPUs will give you more points than CPU folding. With the price of the 7950 and 7970 are really low now I would try to find them since they give Nvida a run for their money on core17 WUs.

Thanks for all your help, 4p looks like fun, and whalers rig looks very cool, whats the cost of something like that?

Yes, 4P can get a bit pricey, but if you can find used gear, they will produce more PPD then any Windows/GPU comparable box.

For a second machine, go with a low end CPU, a mobo that has a bunch of PCIe lanes, I like the MSI-Z77x-GD65 myself. Then buy up 7970 or 7950. Look around for deals and/or used parts to. This can maximize your potential.
