[REVIEW] Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Just a small warning that I have been using Samsung phones for years, but I am trying to be as objective as possible with this review. So here's the good and bad points about Samsung's latest offering.

 

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the latest flagship from Samsung and has officially been on sale since the 11th of March 2016. The device features Samsung's latest advancements in various different areas, in this review, I'll be sure to go down in sections, covering the important parts and leaving some room for discussion and criticism.

 

1. Design

Since the Galaxy S6, Samsung have adopted their aluminium-banded Gorilla Glass design on the front and back of the handset, this makes for an absolutely stunning look. But make no mistake, it's an absolute fingerprint magnet! All fingerprints aside however, this device looks absolutely beautiful, and in my opinion, it has to be, by far, the most innovative design I've seen since the early iPhone. In a world where smartphones are starting to look the same wherever you look, the S7 Edge really holds its own in the design arena.

I absolutely love how that 2.5D Gorilla Glass curves flush into the bezel, making a sleek, elegant design accent to this handset. The QHD Super AMOLED display just tops off the design aspect of the device, allowing for an Always-On, convenient display which we have seen in other phones like LG's line-up.

Taking a look at the back of the device, Samsung have made some very discreet changes this year, they've slightly curved the edges for a more ergonomic "in-the-hand" feel, and to be honest, it really sits very nicely, however (and it may seem really picky) but it's slippery, you really want to get this phone in a case of some description, which granted will probably defeat the object of buying this phone for the looks, but if you don't then it's going to fall right out of your hands. Something new and coming to devices that we've seen, like the Sony Tablet Z4 is capless water resistance, meaning the ports on the device can be exposed to the elements and still resist water from accessing the crucial components internally. The S7 Edge is IP68 Water Resistant to 1m for 30 minutes, or around 1.5m for 15-20 minutes, but be warned, this doesn't mean you won't trigger the water-damage indicator right under the SIM tray, and Samsung won't replace devices damaged by water as stated in the warranty for the handset.

 

Overall, the design is amazing, and although not a massive step-up from the Galaxy S6, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better looking device depending on what you're into in terms of smartphones, as there are many to choose from at the moment, with more emerging on the market everyday.

 

2. Performance

So we'll just get the specs out of the way right now, this year's S-Series device sports Samsung's latest Exynos 8890 if you live outside of the US, or the Snapdragon 820 if you're in the US, 4GB LP-DDR4 RAM, 2560x1440 534PPI QHD Super AMOLED display and a 12MP, f/1.7 rear snapper with OIS and Phase-Detection AF (It's also worth noting that the camera is more flush with the body of the phone as the device is 0.9mm thicker than the previous S6, presumably for all that waterproofing stuff).


in terms of raw stats, the S7 and S7 Edge are not slouches, the Snapdragon 820 variants clocking in 2282 Single-Core and 4979 Multi-Core respectively on Geekbench3. AnTuTu score clocks in at 125,282 which is massive, although this could be down to the Adreno 503 GPU which supports high-end gaming.

 

3. OS/Functionality

This year, we have Samsung shipping it's latest flagship with Google's latest consumer offering 6.0.1 Marshmallow skinned (as usual) with Touchwiz, Samsung's proprietary launcher and UX design, it's to be noted that Touchwiz has received lots of criticism over the years for being heavily bloated and childish, but since the S6, Samsung have come a long way in making it more optimized and suited for all users, now with more options for changing themes, setting the grid size on the homescreen which is an option we've seen in many devices before and more.

The colours really pop right out of the screen, Samsung screen drivers have improved as much as the screens themselves over time. Back when I owned the Samsung Galaxy S2, I rooted the phone and added custom firmware (Cyanogenmod 12.1) which obviously doesn't contain those drivers and the screen appeared dimmer, less colour etc. Touchwiz and all of its drivers really make the best use of the hardware in the device, and I would probably go as far as to say you wouldn't even need to root these phones unless you really wanted to, especially seeming as you wouldn't be able to use Samsung Pay anyway as it uses Samsung Knox which would be tripped to 0x1 if custom files are flashed such as CF-Autoroot.

Overall Conclusion

Although this device has some minor issues, like slight overheating when playing games excessively, this particular phone belongs to my other-half who complains of periodic lagging when switching between Restaurant Story 2 and virtual pet games like Shibo. But all gripes aside, this is a top-quality smartphone, with lots to offer the consumer and business user. Wow overheating what a surprise. Wow a phone just now as powerful as an iPone. Get on steve's level! What is battery life?

What's the storage like on it? I've heard that there's a new option to make an SD card part of the system memory or some sort? Is this any good? I'm not sure I'd like that "always on" feature seems like a useless feature if the phone is in my pocket often times.

I see what you're saying, most smartphones have been designed to compete with the iPhone, very little manufacturers actually have vision these days. I believe Samsung really innovated with the curved display though. The battery life is relatively standard, the 3600mAh battery powers the phone with light use on one charge for around 12-13 hours, but with extensive gaming and graphics use, the battery depletes pretty fast, that's my experience with the Exynos variant anyhow, the Snapdragon one may be different.

Good question, the expandable storage up-to 232GB with the 32GB phone model seems ample, unfortunately Samsung opted not to allow the merged SD card and System memory feature as they believed it could bottleneck the UFS2.0 speeds which have been achieved with the internal memory. When apps have been moved to the Micro SD card however, providing it's class 10 like most cards are these days, you won't really see any drop in performance when writing camera recordings or exporting video.

It seems like a decent phone but didn't the iphone 6 have a rounded screen first? I am not saying they are the same as the S6 curved is really curved making it a pain when you drop it and it always breaks. Hahah no really I like the way phones have a bit of a curved edge, makes scrolling left to right very smooth feeling

Good points, it will always be the age-old conversation of which company delivered specific innovations first. I believe it was Apple who came up with the 2.5D glass first yes, but you'll find the curved screen on the S7 Edge to be deceptively strong, It has been shown in a few videos actually fairing up against drop tests better than the 6S and 6S Plus. :)

Frankly, it doesn't really serve much purpose to "point it out", unless you're doing it as a side notion in your otherwise on-topic post, it just ends up derailing the thread and/or encouraging users to not post at all.

 

Just report the post (such as I did) and move on. The mods will then move the thread to the correct forum when they get around to it. No harm, no foul, as they say.

Another issue, is that Samsung said that it has the best camera than any other phone on the market. Sadly, the Lumia 950 / 950 XL still beats it.

To be fair, the f/1.7 aperture in the GS7E vs the f/1.9 in the Lumia 950 makes low-light performance and low-light colour definition slightly better, but ultimately in good lighting conditions, the higher resolution and pixel count in the 950/XL gives it the edge there.

In good lighting conditions, the 950/XL gets better focus on zoomed images, whereas the details are slightly lacking on the S7/E, at first glance, this would make the 950/XL camera a sure-fire winner for me. But hold on, there's more...

In low-light, the S7/E's f/1.7 aperture really shines through (no-pun intended) and gets better colour details etc.

In terms of colour saturation, in decent ISO12233 setting, the 950/XL camera really gives a better range of colours, more saturated looks, again with the higher resolution, it makes it a sure-fire winner here too.

 

I haven't personally taken these two cameras out for a test-drive but I might just to see the difference and report back.
