Does Thermal Paste Expire?

Evoked ピーター

I bought a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO in 2011, but i never installed it. never even opened it. This week ill be rebuilding my computer and iv decided to add it to my 6600k CPU as it does not come with a CPU cooler.

The Hyper 212 EVO comes with its own thermal paste right? Will it still be okay to use? Iv never even opened the CPU coolerbox so nothing inside is touched....

Can i use or not? If i cant, what themal paste should i go buy?

get some MX-4 , it lasts over 8 years

your 212 evo paste is probably too old to use effectively

I would get new thermal paste for it. The stuff that comes on that cooler is pretty horrible. When i still had an h212, i dropped 10c from just a better thermal paste.

as an example, I was taking a cpu off of a PC from 2000ish and the paste was basically powder

well, being used and being in a tube is quite different lol

if its applied onto the cooler then i suggest replacing it, if its in a tube and you dont mind the marginally better temps the other thermal paste offers

i suppose you can use it, its just not worth the hassle to rush out and buy a new thermal paste for few celcius lol

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Also another question.

Since i bought the CoolerMaster EVO in 2011, will it still be okay to use on a new Skylake processer?

Might as well get some new Thermal Paste then. its relatively cheap and the parts dont come untill thursday so might as well :)

Will a 212 EVO from 2011 still work with a new Skylake 6600k on a Gigabyte Z170 HD3 mobo?

Should, if it fits socket 1155 then it should fit skylake

Anything really is decent thermal paste.. I personally use a $1 tube of it. I bought like 5 huge tubes of it for like $3

There's minor differences between pastes. And while in sealed tube, they don't really dry up. Its like glue or toothpaste. It would take 10+ years for something to happen.

212 has multi-mount bracket which is compatible for all 115x sockets. Use middle holes.
