Idle Temp With Two Monitors

Hey guys! I ran into an obstacle with my GPU. I have a Sapphire R9 280 Dual-X. When I have both monitors on, my idle temp goes from 36C to 51C. I honestly don't know why. I have the average 3 fans case fan system blowing positive air. When I have one monitor, it idles at 36C. When I have both, it goes up to 51C and under load it reaches above 84C. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but if you guys could help me out, that would be fantastic.

If it helps, I'm getting a new case and some new fans pretty soon, so I will be able to actually have better cooling.

This could be because of a few things:

1) Case has bad airflow

2) PSU facing fan side up

3) Case on a plush carpet

4) Well AMD does get hotter...

You can go into MSI Afterburner and set a custom fan curve if you want.

So this would mean that I should have my PSU facing fan side down? I never thought of that, but that makes a LOT of sense. I just recently started getting into the whole building computers thing, so I know a lot about the basic stuff, but I'm terrible at air flow and temps. I don't have carpet, but this all helps a ton. Thanks man!

Repaste the GPUs.  Sudden jumps in temperature like that indicate the heatsink isn't making good contact.

Also, AMD sucks.   Even 4 years ago before I switched to NV, they couldn't handle basic shit like multi monitors without having to up-clock the GPUs, which probably is why your idle goes up when you put the second monitor on.

I successfully ran dual monitors off my 290X with no difference in clocks or temperatures.

stop hating on AMD.

I use AMD CPU and GPU and everything always seemed fine. It just matters on which manufacturer you take. Mine is a Sapphire, and not a whole lot of people fancy their manufacturing skills. I should have looked that part up before buying a Sapphire GPU.

But I will take your advice and repaste the GPUs. Thanks!

sapphire makes great coolers

their thermal paste is somewhat shit, but once you replace that, it's a great card

I just replaced it and I'm already seeing some progress.

That's about how much it dropped for me.
