Core 2 Duo OC quick question

Just sorting out my previous benchmarks, how good is a Core 2 Duo E8500 if it could (its dead now-inserted in the socket the wrong way) do 4GHz at 1.312V on an Asus P5K VM with only a slightly-better-than-stock cooler?

I figured you'd also be able to tell me-I didn't realise until just now how little voltage it was taking to get to 4GHz in comparison to my Xeon X5450 @Jumper118@ProKoN@harrynowl

My e8400 hit 3.7ghz without overvolting anything... And it simply wouldnt go any faster because the damn sata controller wont run any faster

I'm looking through various reviews, but were they really all like that? Because the overclock I managed was only done one a motherboard that had no cooling on its 3 phase VRM, and I can't get any where near the voltage/clock scaling with my Xeon-which is supposed to be binned higher than consumer chips regardless of the core count (my QX6850 I never expected much from-it is only 2x Conroe C2D after all, and has a 10 degree delta on first core package over the second).

My q9650 was hitting about 3.6ghz before I had to put more voltage.

I got very lucky in the silicon lottery when I got my Core 2 Duo E8400 for $20 on Ebay and overclocked it to a stable 4.2GHz at 1.3V.

To put that into perspective, I already had an E8400 and couldn't do better than 3.8GHz at 1.35V with the same motherboard and RAM.

So yes, I'd say 4.0GHz at 1.312V is quite healthy.

Well, at least I know now that I had got lucky, and to kick myself harder for killing it. I need to find a 45nm Xeon/C2Q that is as good or better-I can say right now that it'd run a lot cooler+hit the magic 4GHz at a safe voltage.

it's alright. my e8400 will do 4.4 at 1.35V all day but on a rampage extreme instead of that thing :P. the chip falls off a cliff after about 4.8 though

My motherboard is not designed for overclocking so my E8500 hit 3.24 GHz without overvolting. Whatever i couldn't make the multiplier or vcore higher.

So about the same cliff as my 4790K then. I think it was the best of my CPU for overclocking-need to see what E0 stepping Xeons will do.

your chip is decent. most 8400 and 8500 have 1.2-1.28V stock vid

 

you seem to have got one that does sub 1.10V

It did sub 1.10V. I did the socket mod on my P5K VM, then had a rush of shit to the brain, and put it in the wrong way thus killing it. The best overclocker I've ever owned and I killed it with stupidity.
