2TB Server for rendering?

Hey everybody, I have recently started saying "I might upload videos daily" which now seems like a stupid idea, but I am a man of my word and need help with the cheapest possible specs for a fast, reliable and easy to use server for rendering within 2TB and 10TB what components should I use including the case?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm kinda in the same situation. I said 2 vids a week but yeah a render server would loosen up my workflow.

I'm here to help people and have fun. Feel free to chat!

If you want hard drive recommendations don't use the green drives xD. Use blacks or blues. or reds for if you need a NAS unit.

Hope this helps :P

Thanks, what other components (Case, motherboard...) do you recommend for these drives, also what price am I looking at for the whole unit?

Try not to spend no more than 400 dollars on this, If you need a case try go for a case with lots of drive bays. I'm really no expert in this stuff but i have had my fair do diligence on hard drives xD. Fucking green drives dieing on me after 2 weeks.

Would try and make it small and be as cheap as you can. Here are some reccomendations:

  • For a case maybe look at the node 804. It is small and has a few hard drive bays to spare
  • maybe grab a 120gb SSD for boot and applications and a few WD reds for storage.
  • Any good mITX board should do.
  • Im not really sure for the CPU. Since this will not be a high end rig and rather somthimg to just render video on  wouldn't spend too much. Maybe a i3 6100 or a i5 6400?
  • 16gb of ram probs will be good. Or 8gb. Depends on your budget.
  • If it is going to be running a but then grab some decent cooling. Maybe a Noctua nhl9i for the CPU and some Noctua redux fans for case cooling
  • grab a decent power supply as well if this rig is going to be running a lot. Maybe a Silverstone sfx unit?
  • I reLly don't know if putting a graphics card in for GPU acceleration is worth it. If you do don't spend too much. Maybe a 950

I've never reccomend for or built a rig like this so take my reccomendations with a grain of salt. Anybody who knows more than me feel free to correct me :P

hope i helped :)

Unfortunately not on the specs I am just curious of workflow. Does Vegas allow network rendering? I know AE does.

To be honest I don't really know, I will probably be making the full switch to AE soon...

What is your current editing rig? If it's the one from your other 'What do you think of my specs?' thread, I'd upgrade/build a new main rig rather than worry about a render server. If you're working in AE, more than 8GB of RAM is necessary. I have 32GB in my system; I have to be doing a lot of effects, but it can nearly max out in AE. Upgrade your GPU (I'd wait for Polaris/Pascal). Add more SSD's for your export, cache and render folders. You could even run RAID 0 with some SSD's for your rendering, since data security isn't really of utmost importance. Improve your main rig before adding the complexities of a server to the equation.

wait....if this is a rendering/storage rig, why are we making something compact and low power?

If this is for rendering, especially a video a day, you want a beefy CPU. Dual E5-2670's are cheap but dual socket boards are still $300+ so probably have to stick with single CPU - but i'd be going a single E5-2670 with an LGA2011 board and lots of connectors for drives. not some low power ITX rig.

I can easily saturate my 32GB when rendering in Sony Vegas, so memory is good too.....

Then as others have said - i'd upgrade your main rig if possible - you want as much ram & processing cores as you can afford for video editing.

You'll be wasting a lot of $$$ by building a second dedicated machine.

What's your current specs/

Trying to build a rendering server on 80-170 Pounds is not going to happen. Get more RAM, SSD's or keep saving for a higher-end GPU for your current rig. When you have all top of the line components in your editing rig and you still can't keep up; then consider a rendering server.

My PC is too old for upgrade to help much I think, I might get a new motherboard, re-use my RAM and get everything else apart from the case new, what do you think of this idea?
