Hi guys I came up with this idea that I will be participating in. The idea is where you have to get an old pc from no later than 2002 and use that as your main PC for a week. The computer must be Windows XP or older and the only thing your can bring over from your other pc is the gpu, case fans, power supply, and any ram you can find for this system. Good Luck. Please leave a reply if you are going to try it.

Try and find an older xp machine if you can but it doesn't really matter.

(It really helps you understand how much pcs has evolved since then and you will really appreciate your main computer after doing this)

I know somewhere we still have a Windows 95 system running day to day

If it is running xp currently or 95. Dont just put xp on a windows 7, 8, or 10 machine but if it running xp/95 now it is fine

I just hope ya'll aren't doing anything critically important on any of these machines, including: Online banking, personal finances, taxes, or just about anything that uses private confidential personal information.

XP is a nightmare for security, and is a hackers wet dream.

Linux for gaming? Linus us good for programers and is open source so it is very good for advanced computer stuff. Not so much for gaming

I am currently working on a 2002-03 era Dell for a client. He has some proprietary radio DJ software that he can't reinstall. No SATA ports. I stressed how bad of an idea I thought it would be to put money into the system, but it was his call. I made an image of his PC as is onto his external hard drive, really worried about that drive dieing. Ran diagnostics, everything checked out.

New power supply, simply because it was on the original OEM one, and he wanted a video card that could connect to his HDMI only HDTV, and his sound system. Celeron D with 2GB of DDR 400Mhz RAM, PCI Soundblaster card, Windows XP, IDE 160GB HDD and soon, a GeForce 6200 with a DVI to HDMI cable.

I have reservations on putting money into a system that could be dead in 6 months just due to age. Went ahead after visually inspecting it. Motherboard capacitors looked perfect, put new thermal paste on the CPU, put in a good PSU, ran SpinRite (lvl 4) and CrystalDiskInfo on the HDD, memtest86+ on the RAM and did a image backup just in case. He said it wouldn't be connected to a network, so that is a plus.

How is this a test of how far hardware has evolved when you primary condition is SOFTWARE?  A real test of how well hardware has evolved or more importantly, how well older hardware has lasted, would be to get MODERN software running on OLDER hardware and showing that with some love and a spit shine, it can still have purpose and use.

I would love to participate in this, but in the area that I live, computer stuff is just crap. Either you get someone who know nothing about computers who is trying to sell their 2004 Dell Inspiron for $50 USD (~$68 CAD) or you find someone who's trying to sell you this "ULTIMATE SUPER GAMING PC 100% " for $1500, and it has a Core i5, 8GBs RAM, and an HD 5450. Even if I did participate, it would be even harder for me, since my ISP doesn't even support Windows XP anymore :/ Anyway, I want to see others' results!

I don't think the CAD suddenly gained more value than the USD, so that's the other way around. ;)

The oldest computer I had dated from 2004 (Athlon XP 2800+), I recently(last week) sold it for $20 CAD (not for the hardware, but for the time I had to take to reinstall Windows XP and do all the updates... ain't doing this sh*t for free and it wasn't worth it for $20), so... I cannot participate in this.

While I do not recommend participating for other reasons, your "ISP" doesn't know, or care, what OS you use. Why would they? How would they even tell?
