Pregnant Cat

So, I am pretty sure my cat is pregnant and I am hoping that someone here has had already had kitties so I am asking how to break up the kids and what to expect from my cat.

Please help,

If the kids are less than 10 year old, don't let them watch, it could scar them and have them keep their distance for a couple days, it could stress the mother and she could do something you don't want to happen to the kittens...

Also, prepare a small, dark place, like a box inside a closet, with towels to keep it warm with her food and water nearby, for the cat to give birth. Be ready to give a hand if the cat is too stupid to open the "bags" the kittens come out of her in... or to take them out of her if she just starts walking about with a half birthed kitten coming out of her....

Then again, I don't really know anything about cats, but that's generally how it went with my dogs. Really, just go ask a veterinarian, you will be better informed than the third hand knowledge you'd get from people on a forum who most likely never had any training in this sort of things or are like me and just know what happened with their own pets.

Thank you but what do you mean with 10 years?

That's just an arbitrary age I came up with, it's up to you really if you wish to let your kids watch.
But after re-reading what you originally said, damn you're really misleading... You totally meant "how to break up the KITTENS and what to expect from my cat." and not actual kids, isn't it.

After 4~5weeks, your cat should start leaving them alone more often, so just start giving them food(and water) yourself.

To start, go with easy to chew food, you can also just add a bit of water to the normal, hard cat food to make it into a soft mush (don't add too much water, let it rest for a couple minutes until all the water is absorbed and the food is soft, then mix it up with a spoon or whatever)

 


Do NOT give them milk, just water. Also watch out so that your cat doesn't eat the food you prepared for the kittens... it's for the kittens after all, if your cat eats it, the kittens aren't getting it.


You shouldn't start giving/selling them until they are 7 to 8 weeks (2 months) old. Your cat should be fine with it really, but don't give/sell them all at once, do it gradually over the course of a week or two otherwise it might start trying to look for them and overall be stressed.

 

Again, go ask a veterinarian if you want more accurate info. This is based on my personal experience of knowledge about DOGS so it might not fully apply to cats.

I have had many, many cats give birth. And many dogs and ducks, too. What would you like to know exactly? I saw cats give birth at the age of seven and it didn't traumatize me or anything, so I think it is fine if your kids watch. However, some cats get really nervous when giving birth and dislike crowded rooms. They can panic and move, which they shouldn't really be doing. If you let your kids stick around, make sure they don't crowd the cat and make loud noises or move too quickly. 

 

If the cat has already picked a place to birth and refuses to adjust to the location you move her (an out of the way, dark, and quiet place is the best kind) then secure the area and make sure that people avoid it as much as they can, especially in the later parts of her pregnancy. When she is actually birthing, it can take hours for her to give birth to all of the kittens, so just keep a vigilant eye on her. If it seems like she can't pass any kittens, you need to take her to the vet.

Yup. Pretty much sums it up. I've been through the same with dogs (neighbors dogs whose puppies I took care of)

 

It shouldn't traumatize anyone. But the momma probably won't be too thrilled with attention.

Just don't touch it and if the kittens look dead still don't touch it or the kittens. In general don't touch the kittens until they are dependent enough otherwise the mother will abandon them and they die

There are quite a few reasons why a mother would do that. Mom thinks one or more kitten is unhealthy, mom has mastitis (or some other physical issue), the mother got... "teen pregnant"; she hasn't reached the age to develop maternal instincts and gets confused when facing motherhood, she believes the litter size is too large and there isn't enough food (this usually results in her abandoning some kittens, not all, though). I got to learn quite a bit when volunteering at animal shelters.

That isn't very common at all, actually, so I don't think the OP has to worry about it. Unless the cat is insanely wild, she won't care if you touch them (though moving them is another thing). I've touched freshly birthed kittens from house-broken pets to wild cats (even bob cats) a thousand times over, and not a one of them abandoned their kittens afterward. I've actually seen more mothers discard the runts of the litter by dragging them away or stuffing them someplace more than I have seen them abandon babies because someone touched them.
