Does recording games benefit a lot from extra threads?

Im looking at getting either a...

- Xeon E3 1231v3 (or a 1241)

- i5-6600k

- i5-4690k

- i7-5820k

- i7-6700k

If i got a Xeon or a 4690k, I would probably be getting a 980Ti to go along with it. If i went 5820k, id probably get a 970 or something like that, along with an MSI GODLIKE Gaming board (cause its so awesome!). If i went 6700k, id also probably get a 970. This build would mostly be for gaming, recording, light video editing, and basically thats it, besides some web browsing.

Im considering the Xeon the most cause it is most friendly with my budget, and has 4 cores 8 threads. Would that be good enough for light games and OBS? And i could keep my RAM and just get a Z97 board with at least an M.2 slot.

As well, any good motherboard recommendations for whichever CPU you think i should get? What Z97 boards are there that have M.2, USB 3.1, etc? Is ASUS fhe only company with boards like those? Because ive heard so many bad things about ASUS support recently.

i7 5820k is the best one out of those. Throw an R9 390 with it and you're golden.

OBS can take advantage of the encoder chip in Nvidia GPUs as well, allowing for easy streaming/recording.

Livestreaming using the encoder on Nvidia/AMD's gpu's is awful. x264 is the way to go, for livestreaming. For recording though, using your gpu's encoder at a high bitrate is perfectly viable, as it barely affects framerate, unlike x264 encoding.

Low bitrate livestream = x264 for best quality (Twitch only offers up to 3500kbps bitrate for unpartnered streamers)

High bitrate local recording = Nvidia NVENC / AMD GVR with a high bitrate offers good performance at minimal framerate hit

i recommend going the xeon + 980ti route

most cpu and gpu horsepower per dollar

what you're doing is probably going to "rekt" an i5, the xeon should do fine

and you dont need a z97 board for a xeon, you cant overclock it

5820k - too overkill for what you wanna do... you dont need 6 cores

6700k - sure, but expensive and you cant re-use your ram

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

When you're playing around with high-end CPUs anyway, put the money into a 980 Ti vs. a 5820K. I'd go with the Xeon. Much less expensive than the 6700K, even if you get the 1241V3 instead of the 1231V3, and you get the same 4C/8T that an i7 brings to the table. Put the savings into your 980 Ti and you're golden.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

What really is the difference between a 1231 vs a 1241? I was on MicroCenter's website since their store in my location is right near me, and the Xeon's are on sale, they are both like almost $50 off, the 1231 being $210 USD and the 1241 being $230 USD. Is there a jsutifiable difference between them?

I was just looking Z97 cause im actually trying to find a decent H97 board :D something with at least a good amount of features. I just saw it easier to get features like M.2, more USB slots, nice amount of fan headers and good reliable products at the Z97 level :) know of any good H97 ones lol

What's the difference between them? 100MHz. And $20. I'd take the 1231, personally.

As well, i noticed you had a Cryorig H7! I was wondering how you like it. If i go xeon, since i cant overclock, im looking for a decent budget CPU cooler that can just keep it from not getting upsettingly hot (like hopefully sub 70 degrees C). Is the H7 a good choice? Or should in step up in terms of CPU cooling?

If you go Xeon, the stock cooler is more than enough. You get the nicer stock cooler, too. The one that's quieter and, IIRC, runs at a lower RPM.

If the idea of using the stock cooler really bugs you, the H7 is far, far more than adequate for either Xeon. You can set the fan to run at a low RPM and stay there for near-silent operation.

Alright thanks. I was considering a Be Quiet! Pure Rock, jsut for quiet operation. No matter what, ill probably not be using stock xD
