Is virtual reality really the future? (Poll+Discussion)

Is virtual reality the future?

27 members have voted

  1. 1. Will VR replace the modern display/monitor?

  2. 2. Can you imagine yourself looking at nothing for hours on end?

  3. 3. Will you buy a VR headset at some point to replace your monitor(s)?

VR Here!-VR There!

VR everywhere..

Virtual Reality is possibly the most anticipated piece of consumer entertainment technology of this decade.

However, I'm still  struggling to "see it"..(Non-intentional pun!)

I think the idea of VR is exciting from a general entertainment perspective but I just can't imagine us all sitting in a room with box over our faces in the near future..

Maybe I'm just so used to actual displays that I think it seems ridiculous..

So I hand the question to you.

Do you think VR will completely take over?

Do you think VR has a place in the E-Sports industry? (again, I can't imagine a theater filled with people staring at nothing..)

Will VR flop like 3D has?

I don't like 2D games...I just couldn't get into them.. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I think it will be super niche for a while, maybe more popular on things like that Samsung VR gear headset thing, rather than on PC's.

Maybe it will catch on really hard and become super mainstream, but I'm not sure.

I don't think VR will completely take over.. ever. I think what we currently have (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and so on) is a stepping stone towards AR. Things like Microsoft HoloLens is where we're heading if you ask me. Where the virtual elements are projected into the real world, where they can be interacted with, rather than trying to put ourselves in a virtual world. Unless we can come up with stuff like the Nerve Gear from SAO, I don't see VR becoming the standard. At least, not with the sort of implementations we have right now.

In the very distant future, I could see biometric AR becoming common place, where people receive implants to send information directly to things like optic nerves, rather than using something like a screen to provide a HUD.

EDIT: I had a Rift DK2 for a period. And like a lot of people, I used it a lot for the first month of having it, then after a while I just stopped using it as it's kind of a pain to set up, as well as being uncomfortable for long periods. Even with the improvements from the Vive and consumer Rift, we have a LONG way to go before it's actually practical. Right now it's just a cool experience, not something that can really replace anything. We need to some serious development in motion controls to make the current headset type implementations more immersive.

I think it will replace monitors at some point. I don't think it will happen for a while, but maybe in 50-100 years, when our brains can somehow be stimulated to create a virtual reality experience.

How will you think internet browsing will be VR ready? Like LTT, mostly text not a lot of interactive elements.

It should do better than 3D TV, how much I don't know, but I don't think it will ever become mainstream.

I would consider that AR, rather than VR. If the screens could be projected into the real world, rather than having a headset that blocks everything out, that sort of navigation could work.

There are some browsers that are designed to be compatible with VR, but they're gimmicky at best right now. If you ask me, VR doesn't make much sense for things other than immersion in experiences right now. It could make for some awesome movie watching formats (there's a VR program that puts you in a virtual cinema, which is kind of cool) and obviously interactive experiences like games, but for reading text and navigating plain web pages, VR just makes things kind of inconvenient.

Some people will always prefer monitors (like me). You just cant replace sitting at your desk, gaming and doing work. And usually when im gaming, im looking for some good casual times with my friends, not waving my head and arms around my room like an idiot. I personally never plan on getting VR (maybe Samsung VR for phones, but probably not) and will be sitting stationary in this technological advancement phase. The only time you'll see me getting out of my chair in gaming is to play Rock Band with my pals on a console. But dont trust me, trust what YOU 'see' in the future of VR ;)

it will personally never be more then a gimic for me, i cant handle curved displays and VR is worse, also i prefer being able to look away at reality for a while when doing stuff on my PC without having to completly remove the screen from my face, also it would have to become really cheap if it were to replace what i have now because i dont have any money, i dont see myself getting any sort of VR headset in the forseable future if not the entire world moves away from normal screens, maby not even then because i cant imagine not being able to look outside at the world without removing some headset. I think VR is really cool but im more hyped for things like smart lenses and such, because what i think would be awesome in my life would be a HUD, i would LOVE that, but something like the Oculus rift i cant imagine me getting, at all.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I don't see VR working for me. I am not even comfortable with headset, so I don't really imagine wearing headset with some huge binoculars on my head. This is not going to work, at least not for many hours and surely not for web browsing or things like this, it makes completely no sense for me. Ok maybe porn in VR makes sense:P For games I will surely try it once it has something to offer but I am not waiting for it or anything like that. I am perfectly satisfied with my ultrawide curved screen, now I only need to switch to Polaris/Vega to utilize FreeSync and 75 Hz to eliminate in-game distractions and deal with some real visual and acoustic distractions like sound of PC cooling and reflections on desk, and I am set, I don't think I will need VR to get immersed into games.

VR is a niche.

It works well when it comes to entertainment stuff.

Rather than VR, AR would be a better alternative to VR in most field

Suppose you are stuck doing some programming problem and want to jog a bit outside, you can bring Google glass like device with you and watch some Youtube or some app that can be played outside.

Replacement, no.  Perhaps for most gaming purposes, but more of the actual use to which computers are applied is by design, brief and cursory.  Looking up an appointment, entering a record, or similar.
Any need to do more than glance over at a screen in terms of hardware would complicate things.

In gaming, however, it will depend on the support.  As things have been in the past, the most popular game titles will dictate the direction of hardware going forward.

I'm a little late to the topic, and I wasn't sure where to post this, but what do you think the  educational uses of VR will be, or how it would work.  I'm not that much of a techi, but I am a science teacher (BIo, Chem, and a little bit of physics).  I was thinking about how VR could give a true virtual dissection experience, which would allow for more flexibility of the animals and number of dissections I can do.  It could also potentially be used for experiments that I do not have the equipment to run, or run safely.  Could something like the 7 gamers PC be used to run a class room of VR headsets say 7-12.  Personally the more I think about this the more I think it would be a really interesting idea with many uses in the classroom to enhance (NOT REPLACE) student learning.  Thanks.

Me- I feel like a secret agent man, as my wallet now has five different currencies in it

Me- It has come to my attention that it is impossible to buy liver in Mongolia because it is bad, but it is perfectly ok to buy salted sheep heads
