I've reinstalled both gnome desktop environment and vncserver, set them up again, but this still happens.

What does your xstartup file look like?

cat ~/.vnc/xstartup

There any errors in the vnc log? should either be in ~/.vnc or /var/log somewhere

Also which VNC server are you using, vnc4server?

I feel your on the right track, this happened before on my Raspberry Pi a while ago, I can't quite remember the solution however.

As above, which VNC server?

System/Server Administrator - Networking - Storage - Virtualization - Scripting - Applications
