Nvidia fan returns to AMD :)

I had a post earlier last week about having a 970 and a 390.  I figured to return it and got a replacement unit.  I got the same XFX R9 390 XXX.

I played GTA 5 with everything turned up and all I can say is wow.  Far far smoother than the 970.  Everything turned up and the lowest dip I experienced was 55 fps at 1080p with everything turned up.

The 970 was ok but dipped a little lower.  The color reproduction of the 390 seem richer than the 970.  This I remember from my previous Radeon cards during the ATI days.  I bought the card for $290 and I'm very satisfied.

 

I definitely have a change of heart

The temperature ran as high as 67 degrees with the fan at 40% with an ambient temperature of 72 degree F.  We'll see how the summer turns out.

Probably true.  But for some reason it just looks so much more pleasing to my eyes.

The color setting on the default crimson was probably just different.

It's a placebo effect, most likely similar to that of what you're experiencing with the better performance. You're perceiving it as an upgrade so matter how small the difference actually is you'll believe it's a big difference.

For the color reproduction, most people with Nvidia cards dont know that the 1st thing they need to do after installing drivers is to go into the Nvidia control panel and increase digital vibrance. Nvidia should have it increased by default imo.

It's obviously set that way for the most accurate color.

No, it looks like garbage and is not in any way accurate. It looks washed out.

I do photo and video editing and it's the most accurate, it's neutral.

I'm using a 1080p hdtv so it's in no way close to the clarity of studio monitors.

Regardless, the colors look tastier to my eyes.  Probably kinda like the iphone vs Galaxy screens.  The iphone's may be more accurate, but the Galaxy screen is far far pleasing to MY eyes.

Same concept with audio. Some like colourful warm sounding headphones, some like it neutral. Other need it to be neutral for work. I like my pictures colourful. I like bright vibrant colours. Same as with my audio equipment. I like warm bassy sounding headphones.

It's not necessarily an issue, it's  more thats what Nvidia has as default, and a lot of people dont even know the setting exists. I see it all the time on different tech forums where people are surprised when they find out digital vibrance is a thing. For people who never knew about, when they switch to AMD cards, it makes them think they have better color reproduction.

It's definitely a warmer card than the 970 but not by much.  Keep in mind it's about 72 degrees in my room.

 

I did play BF4 with DX11 and Mantle.  The GPU ran just a bit cooler under Mantle and it's little bit smoother.  Not by much.

390 is a awesome card which is why I say people should grab it if the rest of the PC can handle it!

I remember Nvidia driver defaulted to Limited Range RGB when you're using HDMI, maybe that's what you're seeing. I recalled they fix it last year though.
