Cat5e or Cat6?

I am going to run Ethernet cable from my basement up to an upstairs room. What would be the better deal to run? I hear cat 5e is the way to go and it will be superb unless you have fiber optic(which I don't). What do you guys recommend?

doesn't really matter, unless you have insanely long cables, how long are these cables?

id go with cat 6 if there isnt a big price difference its a bit better

If your never planning on going over gigabit speeds CAT 5E is good, if it's only a few dollars more CAT 6 is a bit more durable since it physically has more insulation keeping with the gigabit speeds. You can do 10 gigabit with CAT 6 under a certain length.

Cat5e is fine, though if you can afford it you might as well just go with Cat6.

I've got a 25m Cat5e and it's absolutely fine. It's currently only linking the modem to the router so only needs to manage 200Mbps, but I've tested it as a LAN cable before and it manages a full 1Gbps with no apparent issues. If I ever (within reason) planned to exceed 1Gbps, obviously I'd need to upgrade, but I don't, so Cat5e is fine. 

 

It was about 3 quid off Amazon, too.

If they're about the same price or if there's only a few dollars disparity per lot, go with Cat6.

 

That said, Cat5e is still sufficient for even fibre connections, since it can handle as much as Gigabit Ethernet, which for most people is plenty.

Monoprice or Amazon are good places for cables just be sure it's solid wire copper and not copper clad aluminum (CCA).
