What CPU Cooler should I use

doomsriker

My CPU temps are too high, and I am thinking about overclocking (i7- 4770). I am going to replace my stock heat sink. I could use my brother's old Thermal take heat sink from 2007 to save money, or I could buy one of many other heat sinks. I do not want to water cool. only looking to air cool. Noise is not an issue, as my system is already far from quiet. I am looking for a good balance between price and performance. What heat sink should I use?

Here is my brother's old cooler IMG_2126.thumb.JPG.fbc37a48a8f557f94fefeIMG_2124.thumb.JPG.bb5be19cb8b5ffe4e3543

That heatsink from your brother might be good enough. should be better than a stock cooler. otherwise, the 212 evo is still a solid, affordable option.

Hmm. Seems like the 212 evo would be a good deal. I might just stick with my brother's old heat sink thogh. Dicisions Decisions.

nothing stopping you from trying your brothers cooler. It cant be worse than a stock cooler and if its performance is unsatisfactory, you can get the 212 evo.

Be Quiet! Pure Rock is a good option if you want a really good quiet fan, but since your system is far from quiet, the 212 evo should be good.

Not sure, check ebay and tech forums classified sections, always deals to be had. I bought a monsta 360mm rad for £64 they're over £100 new.

I dont know how much room you have in your case, but i like my air cooling...beastly :-)))

never had any thermal issues with this monster "Be Quiet - Dark Rock Pro 3"

worth every penny.

fyi there's another fan that goes on the outside, but it was off so i could install the low profile ram first.

How do you like your DRP3? How good is the noise? I know it's made for quiet, but how does it sound with the rest of your setup? :)

LOL the hyper 212 is crap? A budget CPU cooler that performs almost on par with options over 3X the cost? I mean, if you want premium, than you can get a better air cooler, but for the value, the Hyper 212 is one of the best you can buy.

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

My rig is inaudible when not gaming, and only the GTX 970 ramping up is audible when gaming (WoW, Ultra setting). The two front 140mm fans are connected to case (Define R5) fan controller (set on 2 of 3), rear exhaust 140mm fan mobo connected.

all fans run about 800rpm or less

"Sounds" like I might want to put a DRP3 in my rig :D but the Define R5 is such a good case for a quiet case

You said you had a 4770. You can't overclock that without a Z97/87 board and/or a 4770k.
