Never thought I'd be considering this, Android phones have been my go to platform ever since my first smartphone.

For a good while now I've been kind of bored majorly with the same platform and want to try something new and different and was wondering how good is the Windows platform for smartphones? (Don't suggest iPhones, hate Apple).

I like androids, but my biggest complaint is they become slow as shit less than a month later, and come pre-installed with all kinds of bloatware that slows it down even further. Uninstalling or disabling it seems to have slowed my phone down considerably. Even with the past few Android phones I run into the same problem. (my current phone is a Galaxy S4 which is 6 months old at best)

I used to have a co-worker that had a Windows phone and he showed me some things with it and it seemed cool.

Also before someone mentions apps, I don't really care about apps or mobile games. the only thing i do on my phone besides phone calls is just text and browse the internet (would like to install firefox on it if possible)

Yeah... I don't plan on going back to normal phones. obviously that just being a joke.

I'm not into apps at all. If I'm at home I'll play games on my pc. If I want a portable gaming solution i have a 3DS. And if I'm somewhere stalling for time I'd rather call and talk to someone than spend 10+ minutes playing candy crush

I'm kind of curious about windows phone too to be honest, having used android and dealt with iphones and come out hating both with a passion.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Another thing about the next phone I'd want is I never plan on getting another Samsung device. My laptop is Samsung and it was pretty disappointing for a $700 laptop. My previous smartphone was a Galaxy S2 and it also went to shite.

Only reason why I went with an S4 was cause I needed a new phone, the store didn't have any of the ones I wanted for a reasonable price (was strapped for cash around that time).

My first two smartphones were HTC ones and I wish I stuck with those. If I do get around to getting a new phone I also want to go with AT&T or Verizon service. I used to work at walmart a year ago and I got a dirt cheap plan through them for T-Mobile, and the service sucks all the dicks. The call quality is shit and I'm limited to 3G speed, less than 1mb.

Depends on what Android phone you get, not every Android phone is as you describe. I'd say that most phones aren't like that, actually.

I got my phone 3 months ago now. It's not faster or anything, but it's not slower. I don't download a million apps, I browse the web all the time, YouTube is my most used app. As long as you the user aren't bogging down your phone, your phone won't slow down. Mine runs as quick as the day I bought it. If you have an app problem, get an SD card (I have a 64GB one for YouTube Red downloads and my entire music library.)

Also, my phone has 0 apps that aren't stock Android. 0. Nada. There's apps to remove Samsung's bloatware, but the best way to do it is to flash stock Android to the phone.

I still actually quite like Android, then again my first Android device that I really liked was my Nexus 7 (2012, 32GB Wifi) prior to that I had an HTC Incredible 2 for a little while and it was okay.

I also had a Hauwei Ascend 2 and that was okay too. Though when I got my Moto G 2014 at the end of 2014 I've absolutely loved Android and even on my Galaxy S6 with some of the things I did to get a close to stock as I could without rooting it and possibly triggering Knox I still like Android.

Though I guess if I could detach myself from the Google ecosystem or some how replicate that on say Windows Phone I think I could like it too.

I don't do anything with apps. Only have a very very small handful of apps installed. And I have a 16gb sd card that I had lying around.

Can't say I'm a fan of Windows Phone anymore.  Windows Phone 8 had the "in a few months" syndrome for the 2 years I used it.  The next great app was just a few months away, the next few months would close the app gap, and launch the platform to rival iOS at least.  It never happened, and the OS felt kinda stagnant.  The release of the Lumia 950 with a beta release Windows 10 Mobile didn't help in the slightest.   Overall fairly disappointed.  Frankly I'm not sure how much longer MS will shovel money into the project.  I'd recommend sticking to Android, and maybe going a Nexus route.

have you tried putting custom roms on your phone to remove the bloatware? i have always taken my android phone and put a custom rom, 90% of the time it was faster, improved battery life , etc. i have had windows phone and it was just too irritating to try and find apps, no one really supported it, maybe with the new supposedly bigger and better hp win 10 phone that might change that

i think the one drawback of windows phone are that most of them are nokias, there are some htc, if fact 2 months ago the microsoft store had a nokia phone for $20 and i still couldn't pull the trigger on it. the worst win phone i had was the htc radar, 8gb  ram, no micro sd slot, slow, 1/2 day battery life, no apps, impossible to upgrade without removing most of my songs on the phone.  the nokia 950 is about $700 the only phone really worth mentioning since it has a decent camera other than that the other phones are pretty bad

i would rather have a chinese knockoff than a windows phone at this point, i own a zte zmax which was $99 and its working great, i miss the ability to put custom roms on it(not a popular phone so no one wants to create one) , if i wanted to run windows on my phone i will just get a remote desktop and control my home pc.

if i post a link to amazon try to use the LTT affiliate code to help the channel http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=linustechtips-20

this is for the gsm s4 , they also have for the sprint, it's fairly easy to do, register for the forum to avoid most of the annoying ads and read though the different topics.

there is a program that will root your phone and even install a rom for you.

this is an example for the i-9500

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9500-develop/rom-5-0-2-samsung-s4-i9500-tyagi-rom-v1-t3286094

it may seem a bit overwhelming at first but i have changed roms so many times i can't even remember the amount, its as easy as downloading the rom to your phone, rebooting into recovery, clicking 3 buttons and voila a new system. anymore questions, just ask me or even better ask in the xda forums because they are usually helpful and have the same phone as you.

Given the present market share of windows mobile and rumors about potentially dropping it, you might be better off with Android on account of the potential for WP to drop dead. But, then again since you don't need it for much it probably won't matter. Good luck!

Don't suppose you could link me to a t-mobile one that would remove all the bloatware and what not. I have no idea what anything on that site means, what's a good one or anything.

it may seem a bit overwhelming at first but i have changed roms so many times i can't even remember the amount, its as easy as downloading the rom to your phone, rebooting into recovery, clicking 3 buttons and voila a new system. anymore questions, just ask me or even better ask in the xda forums because they are usually helpful and have the same phone as you.

I found this thing here online, is it a decent one? https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
