3000mhz memory

I am new to overclocking and just bought a,  Gigabyte g1 z170 motherboard,  an i5 6000k with 16gb of 3000mhz memory and cant seem to get it to run at the the aforementioned speed or in XMP mode, is it the same as a CPU where as I need to tweak the voltage?

@WeeMan85

did you try to enter the primary timings manually? (cl15-15-15-35-T2 for example and select 3000mhz for frequency) xmp doesnt set secondary or tertiary timings anyway. you might need to tweak a little voltage on your vccsa (system agent voltage, but shouldnt be more than 50mv on skylake) adding 25mv to your dram voltage can  increase stability too.

Hmm, sorry don't have any experience of this myself.. had a look at a few reviews that seem to suggest that the RAM could be unstable, a few people have had problems trying to get it to run at that speed. How long have you had the sticks?  if you haven't had them long I would be tempted to return them and get something different.

Highly not recommended by who? You? The only people who do not recommend memory overclocking are the people that do not know how to overclock memory.

Solid advice here. You do not want to have VCCIO/VCCSA running beyond 1.25v for 24/7. I personally do not recommend running over 1.15v, as you can technically make it run with less voltage by slightly loosening certain tertiary timings, with little impact on overall bandwidth.

You may want to look into turning MRC Fast Boot off. I dislike the way it handles previously trained timings. I would do that first, then follow the advice given by Minsekt above.

What BIOS version are you running? Some early revision BIOS's had limited/poorly implemented XMP support (this goes for nearly all the manufacturers). I'd only run the BIOS update if you see more recent versions that specifically site memory/XMP support updates.

This should be as simple as hitting the XMP drop-down menu and choosing your speed divider.

I'm going to research all what you have set about adjusting the timings manually because I have no idea how to go about doing it

In theory yes, in pratice it's a bit more finnicky. A lot of Z170 boards have issues with XMP. Setting it will result in a failed OC on boot. Usually not on 500 dollar boards though.

Well i have some results i have XMP working but not at the specified speed as memory suggests (3000mhz) i have it running at 2800mhz in XMP but any higher and PC wont post. this is as far as my memory knowledge goes as of now and i have updated BIOS.

failed for what reasons? I haven't had any XMP issues with my OC Formula w/i3-6100 or the 6600k :| I do always manually key in my voltage values though.

Is the DRAM voltage being adjusted to match the XMP specs? If it has try notching up the RAM voltage by .01-.02v and keying manually.

Some boards can't handle the memory overclock and they will give you the error message OC failed. XMP is a factory defined overclock of the memory. It's mostly the cheaper boards that have problems with XMP. More expensive boards with better power delivery system (more phases for CPU and mem etc) have less issues.
