Gigabyte returning unfinished card after RMA

So recently my 280X has been acting weird and i couldn't figure out why since it had came back from an RMA for dead mosfets in the summer along with my 7970 (both were fixed), I thought it was drivers so I did a clean install, tried different versions, etc. To no avail I decided to take off the cooler to see if it was a thermal issue, and what do I find? half of one of the thermal pads for the RAM was missing and it looked like it was cut with a play-doh knife...anyone know of this happening before, or is this a one off example of bad QC?IMG_20160304_141649.thumb.jpg.aa66d20548

Google for Gigabyte QC. It's pretty shit.

My friend's GTX 760 Windforce literally came with a bent heatsink, like someone had dropped it.

Damn that sucks, call them and demand a refund/RMA. Also I have a power color turbo duo R9 280X and the first one I got works like a charm. I still have it from December.

already setting it up, and my 7970 died a couple months ago, so maybe they copped out on that too

They spare no effort don't put in any effort in AMD products. Never go to them if you're buying a radeon GPU.

Whoa what, I understand the Gigabyte problem, however AMD recent drivers like the 16.1 are not bad. I actually prefer them over Nvidia's.

Did you clear your cache from the old install? If you didn't that can cause that problem...

Well that isn't AMD's fault. That sounds like the GPU problem. There is no reason for it not to work on a clean install unless it is a hardware problem. Did you make sure you got the right drivers for your GPU? As there are multiple drivers of 16.1 for different types of GPU's.

i selected windows 10 64-bit under the gpu driver section from their website, and downloaded it just like i have for the last 5 years...also it happened with 16.1, 16.1.1, and 16.2, but everything 15.12 and earlier worked

Yeah, they have drivers for different series of GPU's. That is probably where you got confused.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

If you see while scrolling down on the left the drivers are for different series of GPU's. 200 series, 300 series... etc

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence in any way, shape, or form. I am/was just trying to help you out. Apparently you must have downloaded something different (not insulting your intelligence, it's an honest mistake) when you tried because driver packages do not just crash when you try to install them on the hardware they were designed for. Especially when it was a fresh install of Windows. It has to be a hardware problem as you have ruled out all software possibilities. Meaning the AMD drivers are broken for just you and no one else, or it is an incompatibility.

Run DDU, then try reinstalling the new drivers.

It is possible for AMD drivers to crash or have errors/issues when installing. It's happened to me before. Even after running DDU. I just ran DDU a 2nd time and then re-tried and it worked.

the issue wasn't with a fresh install, it was happening when i was updating them after months of windows being installed, the only way i was able to get a newer driver to install was a clean install of windows

Oh, I thought you couldn't get it to install even after a fresh new install of Windows. That is why I was saying what you were saying didn't make any sense. My bad. Just uninstall the drivers and make sure all the cache is cleared from the installs and try again. There was no need to reinstall windows. Generally the problem is something simple, like a old folder left over after you installed the drivers that prevents the installer to overwrite it or something like that.
