Hi Guys,

 

I have a 5960X and I had it overclocked to 4.5ghz 100% stable at 1.3v no I have dropped it to 4.2GHZ 1.2v and it isn't as stable so I wanted to know is 4.5ghz at 1.3v safe and will it damage the cpu overtime I have already tested this chip to see what it can do and it easily went to 4.8ghz at 1.36v but I don't want to run it to it's limts.

depends on how cool you can keep it at the voltage

I never go above 1.35v, and I think intel recommends not exceeding 1.3v.

 

If you have sufficient cooling I don't think 1.36v will hurt, but you're playing with fire especially with the price of that processor.

As long as the temps are fine, I think I heard that ~1.4v-1.5v should be safe.

I tried 1.1v 4.2ghz and left if for 3 hours doing an aida64 stress test and it was fine for the whole 3 hours however when I launched a game I was getting fps drops that even Gsync couldn't smooth out almost like having high ping however it wasn't an online game so couldn't have been ping.

So I am right in thinking that voltage will not harm your cpu as long as you keep it within safe temperatures (below 80)

There will still be a limit though for what is safe to go up to for example 3v would kill the cpu quite quickly as that is an insane voltage what I meant is what is the ideal voltage to not exceed when overclocking.

I've got no experience with a 5960X and thus don't have any reference beyond what I've read, but I can tell you that even if I had a custom loop keeping the thing at 45C under full load, that's more voltage than I'd be willing to gamble on a $1,000 CPU.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I will leave it at a very stable 1.3v 4.5ghz it can do 4.6ghz on that voltage as well but 4.5ghz will be fine for now as it makes single core performance much better the 3.0ghz base makes this expensive chip compete with the ivy cpu's in single threaded work so to make it be up with skylake and haswell mainstream cpu's the 4.0ghz-4.5ghz is needed I may put it back to 4.0ghz once I have worked out what a stable voltage would be for it at that core clock.

1.3v doesn't scare me. The idea of pumping 1.5v through does lol

I've had mine at 1.39v for quite a while now. I haven't experienced any voltage degradation under 1.4v for all of my Haswell chips (they range from 1.35-1.39). All of them are under water aside from the 5820k, but with the NH-D14 it might as well be.

more or less yes, unless you go completely bonkers some people start to be concerned about electronmigration... I don't believe in electrons

Don't feel bad I never saw degradation from my 4930k and I pumped a good 1.8v through it a handful of times but would usually do it at around 1.75v for v core but it was well below 80c it was just chilling around -160c or so.

 

I would not go over 1.35v for a 5960x as it really starts to put out heat and it gets hard to dissipate unless you got some money in a good custom loop.

360x45 + 240x35 rads. Never above 85C. Thermal throttle kicks in at 1.6-1.65v depending on the bench.

I haven't tried to bench the 5960x under ln2.  I haven't had time to go fill my tank with working so much the past few months.  Even my 4930k wasn't a great chip under ln2 it would only hit about 5.9ghz.

I have three radiator in my custom loop lol two 360mm and a single 140mm but I don't plan using it over 1.3v I just wanted to know if 1.3v was within safe limits lol

I'd probably leave it at 1.3v for my 24/7 OC, 1.35v for times when you are benchmarking. Great cooling or not I wouldn't push 1.4v on that chip. Not until you've gotten a few good years of use out of it. Getting 4.5 at 1.3v I would hate to ruin that by degrading it running it at 1.4v for awhile. You'll find the 1.3v 4.5 OC isn't stable any longer...  you end up having to bump it to 1.325v. The performance gains above 1.35v will get smaller and smaller from there on out and the temps start ramping up considerably as well.

 

This isn't 100% set in stone of course, this is just basic info and kind of applies to everything since Ivy/Sandy Bridge until Skylake. Skylake is a little lower voltage so you can just subtract .05v off all those previous numbers.

Well, i'm able to get a stable oc (as far as I can tell) of 4.0ghz with 1.089v on air using a CM hyper 212 evo and a evga x99 classy mobo. my temps in aida64 never got above 70c, and its running about 40-45c when I got chrome open (I have around 30 tabs open)

Same I have mine at 4ghz now 1.08v and I am happy with it I did some benchmarks in games and it doesn't make a lot of difference going from 4 to 4.5 but the difference from 3 - 4 is massive :D
