Sooo first I tried an AMD R9 390, way to inefficient and LOUD for my taste, even on stock speeds. Then I switched to a GTX970 and while my card apparently has a good GPU and overclocks pretty damn good I am kind of underwhelmed by it´s performance. So the Solution for me seems:

-Keep the 970 as a backup/second rig card, never bad to have a spare midrange graphics card. Bought it used without guarantee anyway..

-Get a 980 Ti with a high factory OC, such as the Zotac Amp Extreme? I feel like it delivers some of the best cooling in the whole 980Ti Range which means I could also slow the fans a little and still get acceptable temps? Anything bad about that Zotac?

You tell me! Who is your daddy and what does he do?

Which 390 did you get?

If you're wanting to get a new GPU at this time, I would hold off unless you just have money to spend. Just me personally, I would wait until the end of the year for Nvidia and AMD's new stuff.

No I'm not one of those "Omggg just wait until <x> comes out!!!" because you'll always be waiting. Just saying it's too close to a new architecture that could potentially offer way more for your money than Maxwell did for Kepler owners, or the 300 series did for the 200 series on AMD's side.

My older brother has the Zotac AMP! Extreme and it is DEAD silent and an absolute fucking monster- he destroys every game he throws at it. A great GPU.

Buys 390, switches to 970 and expects more performance?

Try fully reading and comprehending the OP. Nowhere did they say that they expected more performance out of the 970. They switched to it because it was more quiet.

I got the Asus 390 Strix. I feel like their coolers are just not as good as some others on the market.

Waiting for a new generation would definitely be an option for me, I can definitely run my 970 for a while. I ran it at 1550Mhz GPU and 1950MHz DDR, which is stable right now, but in 3 month the ambient temps will be...supoptimal.

Does Nvidia do the "tick-tock" a bit like Intel so you can guess wether a big leap in performance is ahead or is it just a surprise every time and that´s why people get so excited about graphics card tests? Kind of new to this game still...

Think you need to take your own advice. Underwhelmed by performance when making a lateral switch in terms of GPU.

No, you need to read: "Then I switched to a GTX970 and while my card apparently has a good GPU and overclocks pretty damn good I am kind of underwhelmed by it´s performance."

They did not say anywhere in the post that they expected the 970 to be a better card. They specifically mentioned that the 390 was loud, so they switched it out for their 970.

I have the amp extreme and its pretty nice. The fans do get a bit loud after 40% speed though.

So to clear things up:

-The performance of the 390 was fine, but it was just too loud for me to be able to sit there without headphones.

-Got the 970 and overclocked it to get closer to the performance of a R9 390 which I bought because it has, you guessed right, more performance.

-Thinking about a 980Ti because it just blows everything and I am kind of fed up with this GPU thing already :D

If you can / want to wait for the next series of cards I would wait, if you can't wait or don't want to then yes the 980 ti would be the way to go as it sounds

Well if it handles a chico summer like this past one, it should also handle what I am dealing with ;)

I keep hearing weird things about the Strix cards. Dunno what's up, because people generally say they're quiet, but then there's people like you who have a different experience. Idk. I have a 280x in my AMD rig but it's from Sapphire and it's super quiet.

Nvidia's been touting that Pascal will be a bigger leap forward than Maxwell was for Kepler, but we don't know that for sure yet.

I'm with you on that one, my Strix 970 has been fine for about two months since I bought it, but I guess it is very new.

The new GPUs will be the biggest generational leap in a while. They're changing the Nanometer process, to almost half the size of current GPUs. They're also changing the VRAM of some GPUs to HBM 2

.

If this was last year, I wouldn't be telling you to wait for the 980 to come out.

I don't think it was the construction of the cooler, but rather one or more of the integrated fans were having issues with their bearing or something like that. But in general Nvidia Cards these days seem more power efficient and in conclusion need less cooling while performing the same which leads to lower noise.

I will look for a used 980Ti and wait what the market has to offer later this year! Thank you guys, I just hope it will be worth the wait. But who knows, maybe a cheap 980Ti crosses my way, I´ll have to see.B|
