May depend on the game.

I don't have many graphics demanding games, but I get around with a 960, so I personally would be more than fine with a 980.

Double GPU would seem overkill :P

I am looking to get a PC with a single GTX 980 & i7 6700K with a Predator x34 monitor. Is a GTX 980 powerful enough to game max settings on the x34?

It wont be enough. I can almost max games on my 980ti on a 3440x1440p monitor and I float around 60 fps

The price to performance of the 980 isn't great, and it hard to recommend. I have a 980 and a 2560x1440 monitor and it is quite adequate for that resolution, but I'm not sure it could maintain over 60FPS on GTA V, for example, at 3440x1440.

Don't get the 980, push for a Fury, it's faster and shouldn't be that much more expensive than a 980.

As others have said, the 980 isn't great value; it's not fast enough to justify its additional cost vs a 970 and not cheap enough when its performance is compared to that of a 980Ti.

Personally, if I had the money for an i7-6700k and a Pedator X34 monitor I'd pay the extra for a 980Ti over a 980.
