not in gaming...

it has lower clock speed, worse core performance, worse overclocking, more heat, and more power consumption
of course there are a couple games that can use more than 8 threads, but thats less than 0.01% of games that exist

What should I get between a 6700k and a 6700k

I have dual 390x cards.

Thanks

Between the 6700k and the 6700k I would choose the 6700k.:P

If you meant the 5960x, it is the big daddy of Intel consumer processors and it's price reflects it.

Truthfully unless you're doing things that require the 5960x's power, then it's not wise to spend the extra money on it.

a fairer comparison is the 5820k vs 6700k, due to how little performance gains (or loss) you'd get in gaming for a processor that costs 3x as much.

Don't fail me now as i've failed you then.

how about waiting for broadwell-e so that you can just swap CPUs and keep your motherboard

You're asking if Intel's fastest consumer CPU ever (16 threads!) is as fast as the new 4-core Skylake CPU. :(

Answer: yes, yes it is faster. But if you want to sell your 5960X and get some cash for it, the 5820k would be a better choice, since you would be able to keep your motherboard. Also, the 5820k is better than the 6700k in general.

Oh. Ouch.

Okay: Idea!

RMA your motherboard. I recommend waiting for it to come back. If you don't use the AWESOME POWER of your 5960x, then sell it and buy a 5820k. Later, there's Broadwell-E and Skylake-E CPU's coming out on the X99 platform. So, you'd already be ready to upgrade to new i7's later.

Yeah. I think it would be a better idea to keep your X99 platform, just switch the CPU for something cheaper.

6700K offers nothing over the 5960X.

What ever Skylake brings, Haswell-E already has it.

Both supports nvme, sata express, and m.2

Skylake's chipset has been updated to run at gen 3, while x99 is still stuck at gen 2. But on the x99 the cpu itself handles majority of the lanes and it runs at gen 3 too. The chipset just handles stuffs that don't need gen 3, like sata ports or ethernet. A 5960X has more pcie lanes than 6700K+Z170 combined. 40 gen 3 lanes in a 5960X vs 36 gen 3 lanes in 6700K+Z170.
