I've never had issues with 70%. Just be careful not to get it everywhere.

This.

All I use is 70% isopropyl alcohol, coffee filters to clean some of it off, and a q-tip to spread the alcohol around and to touch up small spots.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

What percentage of isopropyl alcohol should I use to remove compound from my cpu?

I use 91%. No particular reason. It's just the highest percentage I can easily find in drug stores, Walmart, etc. I use a dry coffee filter first to get as much paste as will easily come up off, then q-tips dunked in alcohol to really scrub (lightly) the CPU and break up what's left. Once those q-tips (and it takes a lot of them) are coming up just slightly gray or entirely clean, I'll go with a few more damp coffee filters to make sure that whatever's left comes off, then another dry coffee filter to gently rub the surface of the CPU and ensure it's dry. It's pretty foolproof in my experience, and takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how stubborn the paste is.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

One thing i noticed when removing my old thermal compound on my 5820K , is that there is still some that just wont go off. looks like it was from the heat, that didnt wanna go off.

It looked clean tho, but when you looked good on it, you'd see still a bit where it was on.
