I'm looking for a decent laptop to be able to game on and use for school.

Hi.

I am looking at buying a decent Windows 10 laptop with 8GB RAM, 500GB-1TB Hard Drive (Preferably an SSD), 15" screen, an i5/i7 from like 2.5GHz+ and a proper GPU (we don't need any of that Intel HD Graphics sh!t here).

Ideally, I would like for it to cost anywhere from $800AUD under.

I am still a student and am therefore stuck for cash.

I want to abandon my current MacBook. Look at my previous post in this subthread for that post.

Thanks again, Alpha.

Oh boy, the Dell Inspiron 7559 that Linus reviewed is right up your alley. It goes for about $800, but the model on Amazon right now comes with the following features.

  • An i5 6300HQ (a Skylake quad-core running at 2.3/3.2 GHz)
  • A 256GB M.2 SSD
  • A 15.6" 1080p IPS display
  • A 4GB GTX 960M
  • 8 GB of RAM

It's a little over your budget, but from what Linus says, it appears to be worth even more than its price.

Although if you DO find a laptop that has similar features but costs less, please let me know, as I've been looking for something similar myself.

I vote for the Inspiron - if you want to game, proper cooling is a must meaning no Acer or Asus.

It's a good deal, but I don't think the 940m can game. I was considering this laptop due to my similarly low budget, but found that it can barely hold 30FPS at 768p on The Witcher 3 at its lowest possible settings- staying closer to 20FPS most of the time.

To be honest that's the best you'll do. My laptop is an i7 with a 740m which does great in most AAA games. I have no trouble pushing 40-100 fps in most games I play.

I wouldn't expect much for 800 AUD for a laptop with a graphics card.

Found these laptops from Dick Smith

One of those has a 920M and the other just says 2GB Nvidia GPU

40 to 100 FPS on a 740M? What sort of settings sorcery are you using to do this? It sounds inconceivable, even at the lowest settings.

Or have you found a way to play at a resolution of 640x480 or lower?

I play at 768p 50-70 fps on BF4 medium to high settings to give you perspective. But now I mostly just play CSGO at 150-200 fps on lowest. Some of the newer titles like Wicher and MGSV have horrible performance but what can you expect from a GT 740m

Try deleting the 'Apex Clothing' dll in your Witcher 3 bin/x64 folder. For some reason, it bought me about 10FPS of performance on my GTX 960.

I think I saw this one but I really don't want a dual core CPU, I want to be able to multitask a bit and have a bit of breathing space.

I personally like any laptop that still uses a proper graphics processor. None of that Intel Graphics here.

A 740M in a laptop that isn't too expensive is actually a good buy because some laptops with 950M's are just attrociously priced.

When you consider the 950M is around double the performance of a 740M, it's normal for it to cost more.
