Posted February 18, 2016 Im making a 2U rack mounted server. Which drive is the best drive to use? I want power efficiency but not super expensive. Brand new ones are always better simply because with used you have no clue how much it's been used. Posted February 19, 2016 for power efficiency, I believe WD Red and Seagate NAS drives are about equal. I'm not intending to start an argument here, but the Seagate drives that had massive failures were all 3TB non-NAS drives - it was limited to two versions of a particular model, albeit a very popular model. WD Red and Seagate NAS are basically the lowest tier of NAS drives - they are 5400 and 5900 RPM respectively. Above that are HGST NAS drives, which are 7200RPM but otherwise spec'ed like a WD RED. Above that is WD Red Pro, which is 7200RPM as well as having better quality hardware and a longer warranty. After that you can look at Enterprise drives. I have two NAS systems I'm maintaining. For the one that sees more traffic I am buying only HGST NAS drives. For the other I am buying WD Reds. Posted February 19, 2016 Hgst nas drives definitely use more power, but they make up for that by being so much stupid faster than wd reds that according to anandtecs reviews the hgst nas drives are routinely the most efficient.
