So I have a pre built PC and I can't upgrade the RAM according to the manufacturers website, but when I took a look at the mobo I noticed 2 free slots for RAM inserts (see picture) (or whatever they're called).

My question:

- Can I manually add two slots?

- Will the bios be able to detect the RAM if I added the slots manually?'

The computer is a Hp slimline s5310f

Unlikely.

Just because there are unpopulated slots doesn't mean you can populate them. Plus, no guarantee that the PCB traces go where they should.

I can think of 10 other problems from a soldering standpoint.

tl;dr: you're better off with a new motherboard

99% sure this will not work

You could replace the current dimms with larger ones (there is NO reason you cannot do this)

Or buy a new motherboard

Yea but my Windows license is a OEM so I'm better off just saving up for a new computer

What if he is at the max supported amount of memory already surely adding more would be a complete and utter waste?

My reccomendation: HELL NO!

why? well:

the tracks could lead anywhere (as Revsilverspine said)

they could be different voltage

they are probably there because it was listed on the template but this mobo only was meant for 2 DIMM slots

chipset doesnt support more than 2 DIMM slots

You could bridge the solder joints and screw all components on the mobo

so yeah. not a good idea

cheers,

How much ram is installed in the PC, ie 2x 4gb sticks or whatever

There is literately no reason you cannot change this, I have never come across a single PC in the world that functions this way

and I worked selling prebuilts for like 8 years

They are 2x 2 GB sticks and the PC is a modified hp slimline sf...something sorry I'm at school and I don't remember the exact model number (CPU is a AMD Athlon X2 250 with 4 GB of RAM)

Is there a reason you need more than 8gb? Assuming the motherboard accepts more (you would have to look up its specifications online) you could easily fit 2x 8GB dimms inside

But I would need to know the exact model or the model of motherboard to check compatability

I find it highly unlikely HP would force you to use the RAM inside, ive upgraded hundreds of HP machines

Pretty sure that wont work,  not to mention voltage issues,  required bios modding etc associated with soldering ram slots.

When they list each error twice, it kinda makes you wonder which one is correct....

Maybe neither of them, TBH if a page has one obvious typo on it any information it gives must be suspect if thinking of getting this maybe lots more research.

Mind you, you should do LOTS and LOTS and... of research before purchasing anything

As an aside I can see the supports "2GB DDR2 DIMMs" bit in "memory upgrade information" where else is it mentioned?
