Neither one will power 4k properly honestly, unless you want to play at medium-ish settings.

980m would probably be more convenient if you use your laptop on the go perhaps, but if you only game at home at a desk, can you get a 980 ti instead of the titan x with the "graphics amplifier"?

I was looking at 980M with External 4k screen, but also thinking about Alienware with Graphics Amplifier and Titan X. Which one will be better for 4k 60hz?

titan x definitely . But even then you probably will have to get rid of AA and lower some settings.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

well, 4k will always be a bit of a struggle, whatever you're doing.

even minecraft at 4K is surprisingly hard to run...

i honestly wouldnt trust any sort of laptop to provide a decent 4K experience gaming wise.

do you *need* it to be a laptop? if so, why?

Why the 980m? you can get the full desktop 980 in certain laptops

Or get a small light laptop with a 970m and use an external GPU

I hardly recommend 4k for desktops, so definitely not laptops

why does everyone say 4k is hard to run on a single gpu.. i don't own a game i can't max out at 4k with my 980ti and maintain or better a 60fps average!

only sacrifice i make is no AA but its not even needed at 4k! games like bf4 run in the 70 to 80fps region, GTA V is 65+ . been playing dying light the following all week, have that cranked up to full bar view distance which if left on default and has never dipped below 60fps..

even large open world games like metal gear run seamlessly..

only thing special special about my 980ti is its 1450mhz oc made easy by the hybrid cooler.

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Laptop: MacBook Pro M1 512gb

I would agree with you, however even my sli 980s can't maintain above 60fps at 4k on gta5.  Other games I can't maintain above 60fps is Fallout 4, Witcher 2 + 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider.  If the game is well optimized such as Metal Gear 5 then it's easy to run though.  That being said I still play 4k most settings maxed because I have a gsync monitor and as long as I maintain 45fps it looks like 60.

As for the question, no mobile gpu will be able to handle 4k currently unless you are willing to play at lower settings.  So if you are planning to get a 4k monitor make sure it has gsync.

GTA V with no advanced graphics and everything else maxed out for me gets 65fps average. Fallout 4 is a similar story too!

My old GTX 770 could play gat v on a mix of medium high settings at 4k too! obviously thats not maxing the game out but its a more than playable experience and still looks fantastic at 4k!

Ok, that makes more sense then.  Essentially playing at high graphics.
