Starting to program : Ruby or Python ?

Hi !

First of all i haven't look into any of these two programming languages, somebody i know who did some serious hacking in the past (if he shows up here i don't think the forum would stand a chance...) suggested that i begin with Python, another one, with less experience but has an insight into all kinds of different languages suggested that i begin with Ruby before i move to some of the low-level stuff.

So what's your take on this LTT community ? Bring some arguments please, i'm taking this topic into serious consideration !

I'd say look in to both and pick the one that suits you - Both are general-purpose high level languages, so what they produce is quite similar. I don't use either of them, but among my friends, Python is generally the preferred language.

From my limited experience, python is a lot more common, so you'll be able to find more people who might be able to help you, and you may find more chances to use it (in a professional environment) because more people will use it already. That said, use whichever you feel the most comfortable with after a week or two.

Thanks for your help, i'll probably continue with Python then, it is actually more about gaining the knowledge to be able to code at all levels and suit my different programming needs, my goal is to eventually be able to code decently with C++ and the other low-level stuff.

Neither. Just get your head down in a C++ book ASAP and thank me later. Seriously, the only way to learn a language is to programme in it. Faffing about is just not an option.
