I have just bought a group of motherboards for far below their normal price :)  I currently have an FX8120 and am looking to upgrade.  two of the boards are am3+ so will work with my cpu. one is an LGA-1155 socket.

Would i be better off buying an FX-9590/8350 sort of thing, or buying an i7 3770k?  are there cheaper intel options that will work well? I would love to crossfire to 390x cards in the near future so would like to be able to have both in x16 mode.

thanks for any help!

3770k is still a very good cpu,  and will outperform the fx,  but ivy bridge does heat up a lot past ~4.5ghz

a 3770k will be your best option as it has better single core performance than the AMD options

I have an H100i GTX, that will cover it?

Yeah,  no problem.  I got to 4.7ghz,  and my chip requires a lot of voltage,  so your mileage may vary ( i use a cm 240m). If you're limited by temps and want to go higher,  you can even try delidding it if you feel up to the challenge.  I lost 20-25C by doing that.

ok brilliant. thanks

You will be disappointed in the performance from the FX series.

Games still don't optimize the utilization of all the cores, when they do - it will practically be too late, or certainly too late to even be relevant/matter.

I already am disappointed with my 8120. even when it's clocked above 4ghz it's still not great

that's not going to change and I'm not sure why you would think it would with the experience you already have

i was just wondering if the fx9590 would be a better upgrade and still be reasonably priced

Please, do NOT.

The fx 9590 is very VERY bad priced. its actually more expensive than an i5 skylake, but still slower.

And comes with various problems:

- freaking 220 Watt TDP. You need a high end Cooler to keep this from overheating

- You need an expensive Motherboard, that has cooled voltage converters, and a strong enough power supply.

- It consumes SO MUCH POWER, for its bad performance...

While an i5 skylake comes with 65 watt tdp, is piss easy to cool, is faster in games, DDR4, M.2, etc...

IF (!!) you chose AM3+ platform, for any reason, the FX 8320( E) is the highest, max AMD CPU that can be possibly recommendet.

And the Reason is simple: Its CHEAPER than an i5 (haswell or skylake). And can be overclocked to 4.7, which is the same thing then.

But anyway: There are also tests, where an i3 6100 Skylake Dual Core beats an 4.1 Ghz FX 8350 in Games. sometimes in Par fps, sometimes almost double the fps.

I have an LGA-1155 mobo that i could use.  which cpu would you recommend for gaming on that socket, it's a Z77 chipset

Agree. Get an used 3770k, maybe a CPU-Cooler, and its the best performance / Money ratio you can get now, since you have the Board

Selling + going for Skylake / Broadwell E (i wouldnt go for haswell E, so short before broadwell E) is also a viable option, if you want the newest/latest tech.
