So I'm looking into getting a pair of headphones for a friend who's starting a podcast of sorts and basically only used the really cheap in-ears or neckbands all his life, and I thought I might surprise him with something on his birthday that's at least several notches above what he's planning to use lol.

So I'm thinking I'll have a budget about 50-60USD; considering this will potentially be both everyday headphones and used for monitoring himself during the podcast, the main quality I'm thinking would suit him best would be a pair of cans that are very durable and can take a lot of accidental abuse, and can isolate relatively well (and of course, have a good sound signature). I'm thinking of grabbing a pair of ATH-M30's but I'm wondering if there's anything cheaper that's as suited for the job or even does it better?

A little outside your budget, but if you could stretch it, the Sony MDR7506 are time-tested professional studio monitoring headphones.

Ya I was thinking of grabbing a pair, but then I realized that my textbooks this semester has done unspeakable things to my wallet, so about 60 is probably the most I can do for this month if i add in like gas and food and stuff :<

Is the MDR V6 cheaper where you are? they are almost identical, and some say better.  If you wanty more bass then get the MDR v600 (assuming the price is ok)

It is not. I live in Florida so most of my audio stuff comes from the web; a pair of V6's new is more than the 7506 if Amazon is to be believed.

Look on eBay and other websites, amazon is definitely not the last place you should look.
