Yeah but I really don't need a $300 graphics card to "write essays"

You might if you want to make the most kickass powerpoint presentation you teachers have ever seen :D

Basically, I'm a junior in high school and I want to build a $1000 pc, but with having no time between school, sports, and friends I'm having a hard time justifying spending this much money if I only can play games rarely. (But it would be so cool) I mean why not go big if you're going to play games on it :)

If you're in school then that's when a PC is most useful. Keep in mind that a PC does way more than just game. And a bit of power in that PC opens up a lot of opportunities.

Sure, but you can do stuff like CAD, photo and video editing, etc. You may not need a $300 GPU but it is certainly better than using a slow $400 PC from Best Buy to do your work.

im a junior in high school as well and i have 7 classes, have boy scouts, and im in varsity 100m in my high school track team and i still have time for gaming while holding a 3.8 GPA. the guys above are right if you cant use your pc for gaming then youll end up using it to type in essays for school and in the summer you can play all the games you want

If you don't think you'll make use of it, don't get it. Instead I'd spend the money on an ultrabook that you can take with you from class to class, or to school, the library, etc.
Sure, a gaming rig sounds sweet. But if you're never going to get to use it, what's the point?

Many professional video editing applications are GPU accelerated. Sony Vegas in particular works really well. Also CAD programs.

I thought I wanted to be a video editor in high school.

Gaming PCs:
Intel i7 4790k, EVGA GTX 980ti, NZXT H440
Intel i5 7600k, Asus GTX 970 DC Mini, Silverstone SG13B

I'll be honest, you're completely right but I'd like to have an ultra book for school and a sweet pc for fun

I'm more into the engineering side of things, hence the need to build a pc, but I've always wanted to make short films n stuff (might need a camera too) but as an excuse "video editing" and "Autocad" are great ;)

for school i use a gaming laptop (MSI GE62 Apache 276) and i dont really see any downsides to it other than short battery life and runs LOUD and HOT when put under load. also it being pretty bulky at 5 pounds without charger or accessories. but in trade i basically get a mobile workstation when i cant get to my desktop at home. plus i dont mind being glued to the wall because my school and the local college that im going to has a bunch of outlets and a huge library and cafeteria

still he can just do what i do and have a laptop for school and then have a weekend warrior desktop for whenever he has time and wants to take it out for a ride. but in my case i use my gaming laptop as schoolwork laptop and my beater box custom build as my weekend warrior

I see the pros of having a laptop like that, but my personal preferences conflict with having 15 pounds of metal in my backpack everyday lol, I'd rather get something like a MacBook without the price premium or the os

i completely agree with you as it depends on the person and their preference. me personally i dont really care about it running hot or loud or having a horrible 2 hour battery life as all i care about is raw power and performance to price. (got my laptop for $799 on black friday) for a person like you i think that the macbook would be a solid choice as its light and simplistic, has a 6 to 8 hour battery life and has pretty decent specs and amazing user experience. (like driving a BMW or Audi)

I don't want a MacBook specifically just a similar device with the same feel

oh my bad sorry if you want a windows laptop then try the dell XPS 13. it has a INSANE battery life of 10 hours or 12 sometimes if your buying the baseline model and it starts at $799

Also should mention that this justification is also for my mother's sake lol

Tell your mom if you get a good gaming computer you'll never get laid and thus won't get any bitches pregnant.
