Highest ram speed on AM3+

Hi,

I have an ASUS M5A78L-M LX v2 motherboard with an FX4100, it says it can support DDR3 1866(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz, what does the "(O.C)" bit mean and is it ok to run 2133Mhz ram on it?

Thanks

the oc means overclock i believe.....you could probably run the ram.....havent heard of anyone not being able to......worst comes to worst is that your ram will only reach 1866 speeds........also can i ask why you need 2133 mhz ram? especiallly with the slowest fx cpu out there......the max you could need for gaming and everyday tasks is 1866.....if your video editing or rendering 3d animations or stuff like that then maybe more mhz ram is better but otherwise is more of a waste of money.

Thanks for the reply, i was looking at the 2133Mhz because it was cheaper on amazon than the 1600 :) , but you do think it would run

Even if you can't run it at 2133, get it anyway if it's cheaper :)

If the motherboard only allows 1866Mhz then you will have to run your ram at 1866 for it to work. Which can also be a benefit as you will be able to tighten the latency up from its 2133 spec

Once I plug it in, will it automatically run at 1866Mhz or will I have to change things in bios etc?

i think it is automatic, if it wasn't you probably wouldn't be able to go to bios with that ram. as marto already said you should mess around with the latency since you will be running it at lower speeds.

Edit, maybe i am wrong about the not being able to go to bios thing but i am not really sure.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

How would I change the latency, is that an option in the bios, or could I just leave it as is?
