Well this thread is for people to show and discuss sub zero cooling. I suppose this thread will also be good for people to ask questions in as well.

Methods of sub zero cooling:

Custom loop

This method can go sub zero if you dont use water in your loop or use anti freeze temps ranging from -1c to -30c depending on the weather :P

Parts for custom loops:

standard water cooling parts are normally fine for sub zero use, however, you will need to add salt or antifreeze to your water or for even lower temps you can totally replace the water with fluid with a lower melting point like windshield wipe fluid with methyl hydrate.

TEC/Peltier

This method is probably the least deficient way of going sub zero and i would not recommend it at all. tbh you will be lucky to get sub zero.

Thermoelectric_Seebeck_power_module.jpg

Single Stage Phase

This method uses a freezer or air conditioning compressor with a single or multiple coldplate/evaps. You can go sub zero at the flick of a switch and as long as you have power you can stay cold for as long as you like! for temps ranging from -10c to -65c.

Some great info on Compressor types, circuit components and refrigerants here:

http://www.carel.com/types-of-compressor

http://www.carel.com/refrigerants

http://www.carel.com/refrigerant-circuit-components

In the pictures below the first small unit is rated at 180W load at -20c or 200w load at -15c. I has a very small condenser and a 1/6hp danfoss reciprocating compressor with R507 refrigerant. This unit is from a Vapochill XE-II i can hold a 45nm C2D or Pentium dual core at around -25c on 1.7v. however due to its low capacity, it struggles with Q6600@1.55V+ and Pentium 4 D's at just 1.5V. A cooler like this will set you back £75-180

In the second and third picture show the opposite end of the scale. This is a custom LD cooling 1HP+ single stage rotary unit with a massive 400W load at -50c rating can cool pretty much anything i've thrown at it, FX8320@1.7v, 3930K@1.7v, and Q6600@1.8v holding temps just under -48c. This condenser is much larger and can dissipate 1.5kw of heat. A unit like this new will set you back over £1000, but slightly less powerful units can be had for £400-600.

Dry Ice

This method is great if you live somewhere you can get dice easily, you will need an ln2/dice pot for this but it very cheap in the short term. Great for a weekend benching session! Dry ice is -78.5c, with pot temps around -70c to -65c with no load.

Cascade Phase

This uses 2 or more compressors to create multiple stages of phase cooling. Lecy better be cheap, because these monsters will be pulling 1500W-3000+W from you wall. Also with the standard 2-3 rotatory compressor config you might want to invest in a pair of ear defenders. with temps ranging from -80c to -130c you can get a lot of chips to cold bug with a beast like this.

68qywg.jpg

coolerexpress3.jpg

LN2

This method is most common for extreme overclockers chasing world records and at -196c you are going to have a hard time finding a colder cooling solution. You are going to need a decent pot for this as well, at these temperatures, the mass of you pot can affect your temps more than the coolant itself. It is also pricey at $1+ per litre and you are going to need a dewar to store it in.

gemini%20z77.jpg

LHe

Now you are just showing off . At -269c you are going to have to use the mother of all pots to benefit and with crazy high prices and super high evaporation rates, you are going to have to have some serious $$$$$$$$$ to get this.

Can @W-L give this thread some glue once the guides are done?

Also, I wish I had full control over my room's heating, because I'd love to be able to join this by trolling really hard with a -23 C ambient outside temp that I could make my inside temp while I run my computer at idle for those sick 0C gpu temps (I doubt I'd be able to get my cpu down to 0C given it's my large heat poisoning in my loop.)

Hard line interior radiators only . Plus I am in an apartment ATM where the windows have screens I cant remove. That said, I would probably seal the room, block off the heaters and throw in my window fans to get my room temps as low as they can possibly go. It just is way more effort than say if I was in a house etc.
