Hi, I'm DarkDragoon.

I have an Asrock 990FX Extreme3 mother board, AMD Phenom II x4 970 3.5GHz cpu, Gigabyte R9 270X gpu, and a Corsair CX750M psu all wrapped up in a Cool Master Storm Scout case.

I am going to do some upgrading to my rig as the cpu is been in this rig in it's lifetime for about 5 or 6 years now. It's an old cpu. It's served me well but I thought it would be time to replace it with a newer cpu.

I don't have the money to toss away on intel products nor would I want to. AMD has been a sturdy reliable company for me so I decided to stick with AMD. After all, why just switch over to another brand just cause someone says it's better.

Despite showing benchmarks but not explaining what rig they used and how close it came to both rigs having nearly identical components. A good fanboy will find a way to scew the tests into his favor.

Anyways I digress and get back to the point of this thread. I plan on upgrading to the AMD FX-8350 x8 4GHz (4.2GHz turbo) cpu as that's the highest cpu supported by my motherboard. I don't plan on rushing out to buy the new AMD cpu when it's released later this year. I didn't buy the xbox 360 when it was released. I won't buy the new shiny must have cpu on the market. So when another year rolls around. I might just build a brand new rig from scratch instead of using the same parts from my last rig. I'm also going to upgrade my R9 270X to the R9 390. The 390 has 8GB of ram. 6GBs more then my 270x. I am also replacing my case for the CM Storm Scout 2 Advanced.

Do you think the FX-8350 and the R9 390 are worthy upgrades to my Phenom II 970 and R9 270X?

So you choose a product according to if the company itself is reliable instead of acquiring knowledge about if the product is better for your money. That's weird.

No a 8350 is not a worthy upgrade, a core i5 is, in combination with the 390.

i5 4460/4690(k)/6500/6600(k) is a worthy CPU, not the outdated FX cpu.

please dont get an fx.... just dont... a 5th gen i5 performs a fair bit better and uses a lot less power and consumes like 1/2 the power. no I am not a fan boy as I own an amd cpu and a intel cpu. I also use amd gpus

My rig: r7 1700 @ 3.9/1.35v, 16gb ddr4 3200, assorted rando SSDs, hx 1050, vega 64 1650/1025

Maybe you didn't understand my post. I do not have the funds to switch to intel. No would I want to. I do not like intel. My first computer even though it was a laptop I won at my high schools all nighter party after graduation was powered by intel. That computer was a pile of garbage. One problem after another. It broke a month after I got it. So yea....sold that pos and got myself a Toshiba L505 Satellite laptip powered by amd. Since then I've stuck with something reliable and won't cost me an arm and leg to replace.

Well, then you just had a bad experience with them. Regardless of your point of view, Intel is just better but I do understand that your funds are limited. Switching from one platform to another is expensive- new motherboard, new CPU and possibly new cooler. If you want to go with AMD, buy the 8350 and overclock it. I had that CPU paired with 2x GTX 680s and it ran fine. I upgraded to Intel afterwards because I have a 2x 980ti setup. So as I said, get the 8350 and you'll be fine with any gpu up to 980 because after that, the CPU will struggle to keep up. Also, get a second hand 8350- you'll save a LOT of money on this chip. Keep in mind that some games will run better and some won't- as the FX is bad at some games. A good example of that would be Fallout 4 and Cities Skylines. If that doesn't bother you and you aren't a 60fpsfile then the AMD option is just as suiting as the Intel.

I think an fx 8350 costs about the same as a i5 4460. I have a i5 4460 and I'm very happy with it.

The only option is either to sell your current system or save up. There are current gen i3's that beat the fx-6300.

I didn't ask what intel crap is better. I was asking if the FX-8350 would be an upgrade from my old Phenom II. Intel fanboys are just like god damn hipsters with their stupid iphones. If you don't have the latest model then you are a wanna be. That's how I see intel. It takes  time to develop new cpu architecture. And if it takes a decade to make sure their newest one is going to last. Then let them take their time.

I won't go out and buy the new Zen cpu. I will wait till next year after the hype dies off. That's when I'll build a brand new rig. Right now. I don't have the funds to switch.

I do not care to switch to the hipsters. I just don't give a cent about intel. I personally will not conciously buy intel. I will only use it if someone gifts me an intel rig.

Till then I will stick with what's been a tank for years for me.

So, in summary: You come to tech forum to ask for advice, then refuse to listen to any advice that doesn't conform with your original viewpoint. What was the point may I ask? To reaffirm your decisions and make yourself feel better? You could instead have listened to actual advice given to you.

That said, CPU isn't that important for gaming to be honest, not unless you're playing KSP with a 700 part ship or something. My FX8350 has served me well for the most part, but in games like KSP my intel purchasing friends (on almost equal budget builds) get a much better experience because KSP doesn't do well on multiple cores. That's one factor as well: while more games nowadays are using several or all cores, there're still a few that only hammer one, which can be a real issue for an AMD cpu given the lower individual core performance.
