3ds Max 2016 bitmap not letting me apply onto objects.

Hello

 

I have ran into an issue regarding bitmaps. Whenever I create a bitmap texture and go to apply it onto an object, it won't let me apply it. Has anyone else encountered any issues?

No this is about the 3D software. Got any answers/solutions I can try? I'm currently doing a project so I can upload it on DeviantArt. It's one of the items for one of my characters.

Try turning the bitmap into a texture then applying it

Should I assuming that you're not a newbie at this?

 

And may I assume you have UV unwrapped the object properly?

I've used 3ds Max last semester in my college and tomorrow I start a new semester. And no I am not that excellent with the software yet, and I aspire to be since 3ds Max is one of my favorite pieces of DCC software I can get my hands on.

 

So where do I find the "Show In Viewport" button

And where do I find the UV unwrapped option. I may have to look into that. I've done this bitmap stuff before and since I haven't used 3ds Max in a while, well I just forgot how :(.

oh ok fair enough - I'll try and help (from memory)

 

1st of all, in order to put a texture on a complex object you have to do something called UVW unwrapping.

So select the 3D model, go to the modifier list and scroll down to "unwrap  UVW".

This is where you turn a 3D object into a 2D picture which allows you to 'paint' a texture on it (from Photoshop or whatever)

 

Now, open the UV editor so you can re-arrange multiple faces into the square.

You'll have to select multiple faces of the object and align them in a way that allows you to paint on it properly.

Example: select a bunch of faces -> select planar map-> align to the x axis

Oh, don't forget to untick normalize map -> polygons in the UV editor will appear massive, but don't worry you can scale them down to the square when you're done.

EDIT: "show in viewport" button (in the compact material editor --- modes -> compact material editor) is located just under the material spheres

From the right it goes: go forward to sibling ->go to parent -> show end result -> SHOW SHADED MATERIAL IN VIEW PORT -> Material ID channel -> ETC
