Does the accumulation of ions cause any issues? Are there any remedies?

Mainly the reason why distilled water is recommended it de-ionized water will strip ions from metals and become conductive similarly with distilled if it doesn't already have many ions, there isn't really any problem with ions however. In a loop deionized water isn't really an issue, but if it was in an industrial setting where a constant flow of fresh de-ionized water flows it can potentially strip or very slowly eat at the metal.

I don't use De-Ionized water because the stuff they sell for automotive has bittering agents to prevent people from drinking it. It gets my hands all nasty and bitter. While the stuff they sell at watercooling stores is like 5x the price for 1/5 the volume.
