Despite my love for the i3, I have to vote for the i5 as well.

Right now the i3 is quite nice, and unless you are pariring that i3 with a 970/R9 290 or higher you are most likely fine. There are however games that don't support "only" two cores, like FarCry 4. That is a minor problem right now, but might increase in the future.

Also, given that DX12 and therefore upcoming games will make better use of more cores, a lower clocked i5 would still kick ass due to the spread out load.

So if you actually have the choice, I would go with the i5.

PC: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @4.2HGhz 1.25V || Noctua NH-U12S SE2 || 16GB (2×8GB) Aegis 3000Mhz CL16 @3200Mhz ||
|| Sapphire Pulse RX 6700 10G || MSI B450i Gaming PLUS MAX Wifi
  || Kingston NV1 2TB m.2 ||  Corsair SF600 || Intertech IM 1 |||
Peripherals: Sennheiser PC  360 G4ME || AOC CQ27G2U || Viewsonic PX701HD || Keychron V1 || Logitech G303 Shroud Edition||| Laptop: XPS 13 2in1 7390 || Steam Deck 256 GB (64GB Version) ||| Cameras: Fujifilm XH-1 || Fujifilm X100T

You mean Z170, right? Z97 is for Haswell, 6400 will not work in it.

They are probably going to be the same fps for gaming  but if your going to multitask I would go with the i5.  The i5 will just be better for all around usage.

Correct. I managed to do 62% on my 6600T.

4373mhz, from 2700mhz base. Trying to make 66.7% stable, but it's proving to be rather difficult in my ITX case with ITX cooler.

Even though the i3 has 4 threads that still doesn't match up to 4 true cores of the i5. You can still overclock the i5 to get close the the single core performance of the i3 but if you are ever multitasking the extra true cores will really help. And the turbo boost of the i5 will help in games.

What mem you use? OC?

It's a Panram Ninja-V 2133 CL13-13-13-35-CR2 kit. 2x4gb, paid $46 for it back when i had my G4400 (4.75ghz). Now its 3230 CL15-15-15-30-CR1 with super tight tertiary timings for that extra bandwidth.

Oddly enough, my kit is no longer sold anywhere. I am thinking they changed the name to use it in a higher model version, as these IC's feel highly binned after my use with them. SK Hynix IC's. Here is the kit, if you can find it anywhere: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/panram-memory-pud42133c134g2njk
