If you have the money get the i7. It does make a difference for editing and such, but not for gaming. Although I highly recommend getting an unlocked CPU

Seems like a waste to get such high end hardware just to record and edit console gameplay, but, if your doing a bunch of editing I would go for the i7-6700 as i7's are usually much better at that stuff.

Probably i5 will be nice for you, but for some reason many people here think that if somebody edit a video, he must have an i7, so.. probably this will happen on the topic :P

So I'd recommend a 4790k instead if in the US (haswell stuff is SO much cheaper here than skylake).

But the 6600 vs 6700 is an interesting question.

IF it doesn't reduce the quality of stuff you get elsewhere while being within your budget, there IS a notable improvement going to the 6700, but the improvement is generally less than most budget systems would get out of better hardware elsewhere.

If you're not gaming on the PC (seriously, $800 in consoles but no GPU for your PC?) none of the above would be the best choice for a sole render/productivity machine. Xeon 1231-v3 and an H97 board for peripheral support (not B85) would give you the best Price:Performance for that particular task. *edit* you will need some form of GPU, as the Xeon has no iGPU.

If you're thinking about moving into productivity and gaming on the PC (sell those consoles  ) AND you're even considering the i7-6700 look at the 5820k and X99 platform, not much of a price difference for even more performance.

If you aren't gaming on a pc, don't build one with an i7.

In the US at current prices, a 4790(k) can be had for like 5-10 dollars more than a 1231-v3 so lets not recommend that anymore...

If you only want to game, get the i5. Games usually only use about 4 cores, and the i7 would be overpowered. If you do content creation such as video editing, the i7 would be perfect. I got an i7 and I use it for video editing, its so much better than the old i5 I had.

Where is this happening? I'd take a 4790k for 260

4790k on Newegg is still $339 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369

Even Microcenter in store is up at $299 http://www.microcenter.com/product/434176/Core_i7-4790K_40GHz_LGA_1150_Boxed_Processor

Microcenter had the 4790k a few weeks ago down to 249.99

In fact, 299.99 is really bad pricing atm given that the 5820k had been selling there before the new year constantly at 280-300 USD, and early 2015 it was only 279.99

I wish I could base all my purchases off of in-store Microcenter deals. Unfortunately, there is another half of the country that can't get them...unless you're veeeery persuasive while you wave a Microcenter deal in front of an employee who doesn't know any better for price matches.

I did the opportunity cost calculations like 10 months ago and basically unless you live outside of 200 miles one way to a microcenter or frys (all frys will match microcenter regardless of distance) it's still cheaper to go there.

I just looked through my old topics and the 249.99 was at least from Nov 1 to Dec 15.

So yea, expect the price to drop again soon I'd hope.

Fry's has refused me in-store deal price matches twice (specifically related to Micro Center). I finally gave up. And I absolutely hate Fry's. These were from the "managers" of the computer parts section, the regular guys couldn't grasp the notion of matching an in-store deal.

These were locations in Seattle and in Willsonville (Oregon). Their rationale was that they only match online pricing based upon the cost, and the cost of shipping the item to you. I have a feeling this is their universal policy, you may have just gotten lucky if it was a more "friendly" Fry's. All I know is that within a 200 mile radius their is just about dick in way of good computer hardware stores. I guess I could drive up to Vancouver again to go to NCIX. That exchange rate is mighty friendly ATM.

I'm about 120 miles to the local Microcenter (and ironically the nearest frys) hahaha. It is actually worth it, but I had a work trip down there and I bought it then rofl.

Hmm, I got mine to match in store pricing, but you might be right.

I'm really upset with NCIX and PPCP's shipping policies. I've looked up the pricing, and they rape you so hard on it. Only makes things worse when Newegg and Amazon almost always ship for free (or dirt cheap).
