Upgrading my shitbox

So my PC was prebuilt by a shop years ago, around 2006 to be clear, and since then the only upgrade that I managed to do( a couple of days ago) was upgrade my CPU, from a E160 to a Q6600, so CPU is done, I will also get 8GB RAM, so call that done too, but then comes the GPU.Now I want a 750 TI, because it's cheap and pretty good, and I will hopefully get 150 $ by the end of this summer, but then I figured out it might be a bit overkill.Why? CPU is powerful but it is and will get even older, my monitor is an old Samsung SyncMaster 920NW, with 1440x900, and the 750TI can get much better than that on many games.So is it worth it to get a 750TI or should I get something cheaper and get a new case and more storage?

750 Ti is what you want to get. Going to be perfect for that monitor

well, what power supply do you have? if its at least semi-decent i'd suggest going a bit further and get a 950 (requires a 6-pin connector)

 

otherwise a 750ti will be a nice upgrade for an old critter.

I have a 700W that I bought for around 15$ @manikyath .It says PowerBox and also it is switching power so it gets the job done.

Yeah the 750 TI is great but the 950Ti is it's newer better sibling and even then you can pick up a Radeon R9 380 open box for 170$ USD!

At that point with the price point of an open box R9 380, the price to performance surpasses both seeing as it is far superior.

Do a test on the power draw, if you are anywhere above 500w under load I would look at getting a new power supply sooner than later. A 500w EVGA power supply would be more than fine if you get a 950 and they are dirt cheap and reliable.

A 15 dollar PSU doesnt have 700W, and probably will damage your system or even catch fire, should buy a better PSU before anything else.

You're probably better off finding something used and just saving up like 500-600 when possible for an actual major upgrade
