Hi Everyone,

i called the retailer to RMA my motherboard but whilst i was taking apart the PC the CPU seemed to be lodged and upon removal all the pins were still in the motherboard.

What do i do now?

Anyone know the procedure from here? Can i RMA the CPU? Will the retailer still take the MB?

Thanks in advance!

@InfiniteM

AMD chip? Did you really manage to rip every single pin off your CPU?

@runit3

It's intel and yep. I've removed a fair few CPU's in my time and there was definitely something up with the MB socket

Last I recalled all Intel Chips have pins on the MB instead of the CPU.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

All the pins are supposed to be in the MOBO. There is no reason why they wouldn't take it. If there is a defect in the socket structure then that alone is grounds for an RMA. Having any kind of stickyness (CPU lodged into the socket) is not normal. Check to see if the edges of the PCB on the chip are contacting the plastic surround shroud on the socket of the board, you should have ~.25mm of clearance along every edge when the lockdown bar is completely open.

Last I recalled all Intel Chips have pins on the MB instead of the CPU.

I know, that's why I assumed AMD, he stated all MOBO pins are still in the socket, implying the pins from the CPU were ripped off and got stuck in the socket... Having the pins still in the socket for Intel is expected, i.e. not a problem.

@Nacho Marco Segui

Here is a pic of the MB

WTF happened to the bottom right of the socket? There is a very slim chance that they will accept that as grounds for RMA as socket damage is 9/10 times due to user error. Only way they would accept it is if that happened during shipping, and then it is usually at the vendor's discretion.

Not sure as I only noticed this when I removed the CPU. The RMA was raised for a different issue will the bent pins affect that?

Depends on how they remedy the situation. If they give you a board replacement then no. If they are able to repair your existing board and send it back, they'll send it back with the jacked up socket.

What was the other problem?

One of the PCI express slots didn't work so it gave an error saying it can't find the GPU in that or anything else in that slot.

Have you already been approved and received your RMA#?

It is entirely possible, given the pin damage, that it caused the problem. Honestly it's surprising the CPU even booted in that state unless the damage was somehow caused when you removed the chip.

If you've already been granted an RMA# I would let the chips fall where they may. Although, don't be surprised when they send it back in its current state and say the cause of the problem is the damage to the socket. It may be beneficial to make them aware of the socket damage, although they will almost certainly deny the RMA request on those grounds. Could be worth calling their phone support line and inquiring about socket damage (DO NOT! give them your case/RMA#) just pretend you're asking a hypothetical question to get their policy on it. At least then you'd be able to make a more informed decision.

*edit* on second thought, who was your vendor? If it was Amazon and it's within the return period just ask for a replacement and sight physical defect. I've only had to deal with one board return and it was a completely blown/dead board 30 minutes into stress testing. Amazon sent me a replacement w/1 day delivery and they dealt with whatever RMA process needed to happen.

runit3 pretty much nailed it.  I just RMA'd an asus board and they were very adamant about not taking RMA's for bent pins.   Asus said they'd contact anyone that sent bent pins in and send them a quote for fixing it out of warranty.

Hold...this is the same ASUS X99 Deluxe that you were having problems with the PCI-Express slot back in September 2015?!?

Why didn't you deal with the issue back in Septebmer, instead, FIVE months later??

No wonder why the retailer won't take it in for RMA, and want you do it through ASUS. Retailer's typically carry a 30-day warranty/replacement period.

Wow...that cleared some things up...

The RMA IS with the retailer, where I am the retailer deals with and replaces in warranty goods and it wasn't an issue until now I could just use another slot.

Ah, okay; I see...

Your problem was with the primary PCI-Express slot not functioning.

Given how the main PC-Express slots' lanes are provided from the CPU itself, the problem would have caused from either the motherboard or CPU.

Personally, if the PCI-Express slot wasn't working from...day one...I would not just turn a blind eye on it.

yeah I can understand that but I didn't have another machine and I needed it for training and studying so I left it until my course finished and it was no longer critical.
