Why is my build that bad

overkill CPU, and crappy GPU. 390X is 3-4 times faster

Why is my build that bad

Because you spent a ton of your budget on your cpu and have a 750 ti. In a gaming build especially at the $900 range you want to spend more on your gpu than cpu. A 750 ti won't do much in most games now a days.

You can step down on power supplies, and put some money somewhere else. This build needs no more than a 450W psu.

Now you should have an easier time picking which one. Yes it's only $10 USD more however (without the 8% tax rates in California), there are better components.

Because that would easily go over the $950 USD budget unless he's willing to go over that. If he's in California there's the 8% tax rate to factor in as well.

you overkill cpu, overkill mobo. if you are aiming for the 900$ price range focus on gpu. you don't need ddr4 in a 900$ build

Well if he's going Haswell/Devil's Canyon then yeah. What I suggested to him is two different Skylake builds.

Well if he's going Haswell/Devil's Canyon then yeah. What I suggested to him is two different Skylake builds.

I would say Haswell is better price:performance

People always overkill their power supplies in budget builds. X99 system with a 5820k at 4.6, and a 980ti pushed to its max voltage at 1503Mhz only pulls 450W from the wall.

Well true, if that's his only focus that is. You gotta consider, Skylake has some really neat features it has over the previous generation. But if he doesn't want those features that Skylake offers, well more power to him. I'm not gonna stop him from that.

Yes. But their prices are going down these days.

It's closer to Haswell prices.

It's just $40 difference. I think it's worth. But yeah, for super tight budget systems, Haswell is the way to go.

You have to factor in capacitor aging as well. When capacitors age on mobos and GPUs, they will draw more power and produce more heat as well. I was told about that by a guy named Steve Sedlmeyer.

The PSU is good and sufficient for this build, but I would get a slightly larger one to account for capacitor aging, and overhead for possible future expansions. I would recommend the Corsair AX 860i Platinum.

I agree - M.2, NVMe. Lot's of neat stuff. But a 390X is quite a bit faster in games and for gaming he might not notice the need for those feature sets with a 850 Evo
