Chucking my perfectly fine 16gb of ddr3 to buy ddr4?

Go to solution Solved by kameshss,
you should bite the bullet and buy a ddr4 mobo and 16 gb of ddr4 ram.

DDR4 is faster and little bit of future proofing here.

Sell your DDR3 RAM in ebay.

So my cpu (amd fx 8350) has recently died and i am looking to bat for the other team this time(amd -> intel) and im going to buy an i7 6700k. When i buy this CPU i need to buy a new motherboard, i have 16gb of perfectly fine ddr3 ram. I dont really want to spend the extra $200 AUD on buying ddr4 ram if i dont need to.

My question is, am i better getting a mobo that uses ddr3 with my 6700k then buy a new ddr4 mobo and set of ram when my current ram dies

or

Should i bite the bullet and buy a ddr4 mobo and 16 gb of ddr4 ram?

Any help will be great

Skylake doesn't support DDR3 and Intel says it'll damage it unless you lower the voltage

So, yeah, DDR4 is really the only way to go in my opinion.

Skylake does support DDR3. But it's not recommended as yeah it may damage the processor due to higher voltages of DDR3 memory.

Skylake supports DDR3L, which is a lower voltage variant of DDR3. Yours will not be compatible with Skylake. So given the option of DDR4 and DDR3L you definitely should choose DDR4, there is no future in DDR3L at all.
