Ok, so I want to build a pc like linus did in he's video

for me and my brother, but since I don't have the money to buy 2 high end gaming pcs I really like this idea!

#note# I want this pc to game on only without that server thing he did in the video.

Before I begin I have some questions about it:

1) Can I do EVERYTHING on each of the virtual machines not affecting on the other virtual machine? Would they run totally separately and independently from each other?

2) Can I get a lower end CPU like i7 6700k? It dose have vt-x and vt-d.

3) How many CPU cores do I need for this? If I get i7 6700k 4 core with hyper threading 8 threads total is it like getting an i5 6600k for each system?

4) Can I go with SLI configuration? Should it be on both v-machines?

5) What can go wrong with is type of system? Can the process lead to dead hardware?

Thank you for helping!

i would recommend it. buy 2 separate towers, its much easier. and most likely more cost effective

What's the point? Just have a user for you and a user for your brother.

It is much more cost effective to buy one gpu more insted buying full pc more the same lvl for hardware.

We can't play at the same time and use it like 2 towers.

its not worth the hassle mate seriously, just with your budgets build two PC's you wont even noticed the difference, whats your budget?

I've not done this, so this is all speculation.  But here are my answers:

  1. I believe so, that is the point of doing it like Linus did. I'd guess that you would mess stuff up when you did things to the base-line-OS running the VMs
  2. I think Linus said you need the VT-x and VT-d for the GPU pass throughs, so if it supports that I suppose it work.
  3. Depends on what you're doing, and I'd guess that a 6700k split like you would would be similar to slightly less than a 6600k if you did 2virtual and 2 physical cores per VM.
  4. I'm not sure, but since the GPUs will get passed through straight to their VM I wouldn't try to SLI, because that'd be like two half GPUs per computer, which I wouldn't guess would add up to one in this situation.
  5. I'd guess it'd be easier to lose data, when you mess with the host OS. Other than that I can't think of anything that would lead to dead hardware.

Take all that with a grain of salt though

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Lower then 5960x...

You never mentioned the 5960X, you called I7 6700K a lower end CPU.

1) I didn't get you, what's base-line-OS?

2) He talked about CPU not GPU.

2) He talked about CPU not GPU.

I meant base-lineOS as in the original very small OS that's holding the VMs.  And he talked about the CPU because those VT-(x) features on the CPU are what lets the GPUs pass through to the VMs

I'd just build another machine, save yourself some time and in relation to what I quoted, since the Core i7-6700K has 4 physical cores and 4 logical cores giving a combined 8 threads I think it would be more like each machine having Core i3's. 2 physical cores and 2 logical cores with a combined 4 threads.

The way 6700k prices are at the moment, a 5820k maybe a smarter option (as i'm writing this the 5820k is actualy cheaper), x99 motherboards are more expensive, the clock speeds lower, but you get 2 extra cores, and more pcie lanes. There's another much cheaper option, the non k 6700 or xeon E3-1275 V5, 4ghz turbo boost 4 cores + 4 HT, integrated graphics for unraid, and most importantly both are alot cheaper than the 6700k.

You said that you didn't want to do the server thing, are you refering to unraid?, because it is what allows the two gamers in one tower.

This project involves a fair bit of technology know how, unexpect problems may occur, and the number of people that have done this and may be able of helping you is very limited, don't expect it to be plug and play.

I think since i7 6700k has 4 cores and 4 threads it is more or less equal to i5 6600k 4 physical cores.

The Core i7 doesn't have 4 cores and 4 threads, it has 4 cores and 4 logical cores which gives a combined 8 threads so if you split that in two you 2 cores and 4 threads so in my book that is closer to a Core i3.
