I always advocate going Intel when buying a new system or going through heavy system upgrade overhauls (with the exception of the Athlon x4 860k if that suits the budget better), but I myself face a dilemma. I'd love a 4690k and a z97 board, but here's my problem: Look at my sig and notice that I have 970 chipset board already. Is the 8350 worth getting over a new cpu and haswell board or potentially a 6600k, a Z170, and new ddr4 ram? Ik it is if buying a new pc or you have the money for it, but I'm not buying a new pc nor do I have the money for it. So: FX of i5?

If you really feel like you want an FX-8xxx chip, get the FX-8320 then overclock the fuck out of that.

Personally, just go for the FX-8320 instead of the i5.

It all depends on what you're doing. In some games, the i3 pulls ahead of the 8350 by a fair amount (link in my sig). I'd definetely go for the 6600k/4690k

FX-8350 is good, but I would OC it and get a much beefier cooler for it. I had an FX-6300 and the 8350 is definitely better. You could also wait and see what the AMD zen processor will bring, I'm kind skeptical because it's an APU... Intel is also a great option, but you'll have to change all your drivers, and it could cause windows to un-activate

FX-6300 to FX-83XX is not worth it for most people...if this is a workstation machine then maybe it's worth it but for a gaming rig they are pretty much the same...

i'd save for an intel skylake.

Zen has apu's, but not all of them will be.

Yeah, basicaly that ^

the 83XX is pretty much a 6300 + one more module or rather a 6300 with all modules working, so unless he's seeing 100% usage at all cores there should be little difference in gaming only (the 8350 would overclock significantly better though, so some single threaded performance improvement could be noticed, but not really much)

An FX 8320 is a fairly cheap upgrade if you really need some upgrade, then you can wait, and save up for either an intel, or possibly the upcoming AMD's, if they're good. Also depends on if you play CPU intensive games. Do you play all the newest titles, or older FPS games, or Mobas?

If your current games all run fine and more single threaded performance is not needed then you can grab the FX-8350 but I would wait for Zen its not that long and the FX-6300 is awesome! :D

while this would be a really sensible answer for a cheap upgrade, honestly, do we want to recommend spending ~$150-200 to get two extra cores on a dead platform, with zen just around the corner? (hopefully for reals this time, fingers crossed)

Judging by the fact that you use a 144 Hz monitor, Go Intel. It will give you plenty of room for a GPU upgrade later on. You should thinking about going for a 4th gen i7 instead of an i5. Or, like others said, see what Zen brings.

for me its not so much competition, as i badly want an amd chip to be good again so everyone shuts the hell up about me being an intel fanboy.

i'm secretly hoping zen will blow skylake out the water in single core processing, and/or be cheaper than skylake.

AMD stated Zen will be around, or a little above Haswell in terms of IPC. And there will be mainstream 6/8 cored versions, the architecture is no longer the one with "modules' but more like the one Intel uses, so if they put an aggressive price tag to them and stay true to what they revealed about Zen, it's going to be pretty good if you asked me

i wonder how they'll overclock. if amd manages to keep up the overclocking potential of FX (not likely, but i can dream, harold) i might pick one up for my home server and let it boost up to a mild OC.

i have good hope in zen, i'm just scared they'll screw up royally.

Can we not focus on arbitrary tech politics please. I, for one, am tired of the "intel needs competition, lets buy AMD for stupid reasons" rethoric.

To answer the OP; he implies that 144hz means you value high fps. And AMD FX chips generally are very bad at providing the overhead to do so. They barely manage 60fps.
