Overclock with AMD Overdrive problem

Hello guys,

I have a problem while I try to overclock my processor, the multiplier goes down to 7 from 21 and I don't know why.

I have a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3

Water cooling.

AMD FX-8300

I will give you a print to see what I mean.

What should I do to fix this ?

There is no magic number for either of those. Just fuck around with them until you get a stable OC.

Your CPU is just running in a lower power state. Stress your CPU and your frequency will increase.

Firstly please overclock in the bios, secondly the going down to 1.4ghz is normal, it's AMD Cool N Quiet that is doing this, thirdly enable HPC mode in your bios.

EDIT for the comment about 1.4 at 100% load:
This is thermal throttling, the UD3 will thermal throttle if the socket exceeds 65c and the VRM get too hot. You can stick a fan behind the motherboard to help the socket temp and a fan over your VRM to help there too, in all honesty the UD3 is a nightmare.

When you say "water cooling" what exactly do you mean?

Disabling APM in the bios stopped me from having this issue on my Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 Rev 1 with my 8350

I actually left Cool n Quiet on along with thermal throttling because I leave the pc on almost 24/7.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

There are the options I have used for bios, same result. The CPU temp never go more than 55 degrees so I don't think the heat is the problem. I also tried with some settings enable other disabled, same results. Any idea guys ?

first of all you need to stop hosting images in Austraila :P

With APM and Cool and Quiet off your still having the throttle issue? what is your socket temp when you stress test?

Yes, I still have throttle issue, never more than 60 degrees. I think the water cooling is doing his job well.

Can you post a screen shot of the entire list of temps in Hwmonitor while the cores are throttling.

also are you sill using overdrive? if you are I would try overclocking straight from the bios.

Also why is the chip listed as an 8130P in CPUz? you list it as an 8300.

Because that's what is wrote on the box and in The CPU-Z is also AMD FX-8300

What water cooler are you using? those temps are a bit high for that cpu at those settings on any water loop.

I don't think it's high. I mean if AMD say what is below 62 it's ok for you, then it shuold be ok.

This is the cooler http://www.deepcool.com/product/gamerstorm/2015-04/6_1827.shtml

PS: I also have the last bios update.

Here is how warm mine runs b151503ec9.png

my chips is running cooler than yours by a lot while it is clocked a hell of a lot higher with a lot more voltage being thrown at it. I think there may be an issue with the mount, because the cooler you linked should be working good/great for that cpu.

The thing is, the CPU don't go to the highest frequency even for one second, that's the proof the problem isn't the temperature and keep in mind I have a 8300 you have a 8350. I come from 3.3 to 4.2 you come from 4.0 to 4.4. This is a high difference. Anyway, I think the temperature it's not the answer we are looking for. And about the mount, I did exactly what was written on the book of the cooler....

the 2 chips are differently binned versions of the same silicon and I am certain your's is running warmer than it should with a cooler of that quality on it.

Also if you can't find a software/setting issue  you may want to check too see if there was dust or thermal past on the pins for the cpu or in the socket. I have seen that cause similar issues in the past. If one of the voltage pins isn't making contact and it manages to stay stable performance will tank if it tries to clock up because it can't pull the power it needs..
