Audio amplifier on the ASUS Z97-A/USB 3.1

Go to solution Solved by runit3,

I've driven 250 ohm headsets off it before. Not as clear/loud as I would like, but certainly gets by in a pinch. There is no real hardset limit, it's just how terrible you want it to sound. I wouldn't even bother with any headset over 500 ohm.

What's the limit regarding headphones I'm capable of using with my motherboard? According to the website, there's a built-in audio amplifier, but there's no specifications to be found anywhere. I gave customer support a try and it was terrible, they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about and began talking about power supplies. Yes, I know not to use the motherboard's audio and purchase a separate DAC, but I can't afford one at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The headphones I'm debating between are the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and some pairs from Beyerdynamic. Although I can tell from reviews that the M50x are great for their price point, I hardly know anything regarding Beyerdynamic and which headphones from them are good contenders against the M50x, but I see the name pop up everywhere.

My wife has the M50X's plugged into her Z97-A, no issues at all, they're not a particularly hard pair to drive.

Depending on which Beyer's you're looking at, most of them deserve a DAC :P We just can't have open backs in our place, too noisy.

I swear by my AKG 553's, not a basshead anymore.
