like crackling like fire or more of a metallic thing. It could be the hard drive failing

It is the hard drive, I bet.

Does it sound like something is loose, or what? We need a bit more details on the sound itself.

Can you maybe record it? I have a super slim too and I could tell you if mine sounds the same (and I have had mine for 3 years or something now and it always started up like that)

Maybe it's just the disc drive, because the disc spins fast and the only thing between you and the disc is a tiny sheet of plastic

its the power supply. while your playing games, listen closely to the exhaust at the back of the ps3, if you hear little cracking, it should be fine mine is still working

I kinda hear a crackling sound when it first starts up, but I of course can't tell if it's the same or dangerous on your PS3, because I have never heard the sound
