I would like to try and bust some myths and misconceptions about PSU's in general. We all know that 80 Plus has nothing to do with overall quality and it only matters on how efficient said power supply is. But what about the others? Like does the overall capacity rating of the power supply means it will pump that much into the system (e.g. I have an AX1200i and family members are saying that it will pump 1,200 watts the moment the system is turned on)

Besides, as a general rule of thumb, the 80+ specification requires at least some standard of component quality so that isn't a bad starting metric.

Yeah that's what they think. I once plugged a 500-watt PSU into a system that you can theoretically power up with a 180-watt laptop power brick. It didn't blow up in my face.

Yeah. Also Energy Star 4.0 (Effective 2007) in computer power supplies requires that it be 80% efficient or more to qualify for the Energy Star rating. If you don't know, Energy Star was created by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a voluntary program to promote efficient power usage.

 

Funny thing is that they think that 80 Plus doesn't matter whatsoever and that they can cheap out on PSU's. Clearly my mom's PSU has a fan issue and as of typing this, I can hear it from my bedroom since the door is wide open. It's not 80 Plus rated.

But what about some of the myths that some people have busted already? Like PSU's don't force the maximum rated capacity into the PC the moment you turn it on, things like that. That's the purpose of this thread.

My partner is a strong believer of this one, she applies it to everything we have. If it saw 2000W, she'll think it draws 2000W all the time even though RMS might be 100W.

Generally yes and no, Yes it is better since higher-capacity PSU's can attain higher 80 Plus ratings like the EVGA Supernova 1600 T2/ Super Flower Leadex 1600 and the Corsair AX1500i, both consumer PSU's are 80 Plus Titanium certified. And no, you can find some power supplies that are 80 Plus Platinum certified of a more reasonable capacity. Just make sure whatever you're getting that they are made with high-quality components and are well-made to minimize defects.

Okay I can take that. I also have checked that out too, so I know what 80 Plus is as well.
