Hi lads

Bought a Asus PG27AQ Rog Swift 4K 27 inch monitor one week ago to play or replay loads of titles such as Assassins Creed Syndicate, Far Cry 4, Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Max Payne 3, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Game of the year) The Witcher 3, Dying Light, Star Wars Battlefront some of them bought in the Origin and Steam sales recently now I have loads of free time to video games and the frames so far on my 980 are abysmal at low/medium settings in-game.

It's time to upgrade this rig even further, so what GPU's do I need to run this monitor? The rest of the system is fine, Its the GPU that needs firing off.

Single 980ti can run 4K on a decent amount of frames. If you wanna have all the frames get 980ti SLI

Get a second 980.  Simple fix.

If it's "only" a singe 4k monitor I'd suggest going for 2way sli GTX 980 Ti.

When you're going to use more than one 4k displays I'd go for at least two Titan X.

I didn't mention AMD cards because I never came to use high end AMD cards in Crossfire.
Maybe their offerings are fitting your needs just right :)

@ All the people shouting out 980ti: this would be a real waste of money imo because he has already a 980. the ti at the end would improve the frame rate a bit, but would cost him ~650$.

If he's adding a second 980, he will get decent frame rates at even 4k and will only pay ~500$ (the only thing we'd have to know: what mobo and psu do you have? @Splitzer)

Would a SLI 980 run games at 4K well fps wise and settings wise? This is my big worry with the 980. I could always get a second 980 and use it as a stop gap for Pascal as you quite rightly said it would be much cheaper for me to get a second 980 than it would be to upgrade to two 980TI's, although I am prepared to do that if needed.

I believe the Fury X beats the 980ti when gaming at extreme resolutions.

That said though, you've already got a 980 so just get a second one and you'll notice a huge difference.

Even though I aggree on that I need to point at the memory the SLI will have. 4GB is pretty tight for 4k even for todays standard. That's why I suggested buying 980 Tis. But that would cost a lot. So buying a second 980 might be less bad than buying a whole new sli setup.

I suppose a 980 in SLI would beat a single 980TI? So my options could be limited to SLI'ing the 980 at £400 spend or £1000+ spend for the 980TI in SLI.

If Pascal is as good as people believe it will be I could always sell the 980's without much regret; Although if a 980 in SLI will still struggle at 4K in new titles I may have too opt for the 980TI SLI option instead.

Hoping somebody can clarify this because a lot of the article and forum chatter talk is about 980TI's and not much seems to be said recently about 980's in SLI at 4K. Do they run well at 4K or will I still be disappointed with the results?

I don't have those cards in SLI but two GTX 980 will perform a lot better in SLI than a single GTX 980 Ti if there are SLI profiles for your applications. More and more games don't come with proper SLI support nowadays. If you haven't already, read the SLI guide provided here ^^

from your spec side it will be perfectly fine running a second 980 (mobo supports sli). Single card would be better but in your position i'd go with a second 980. 980SLI will do very well at 4k, I would wait for the expensive solution until pascal comes out and there's hopefully avery capable 4k card

Will both cards run identically? I read something about X16, X8, X4 limitations or something with MOBO's in the GPU SLI slot? Might be worth knowing that before buying.

If all is good I will SLI the 980 at least until Pascal's offerings ;). Hopefully the second 980 allows me to run the games at good frames and higher in-game video settings.
