So I built my PC a few months ago- less than a year old and everything is still on warranty.

About a month ago I noticed my screen went black, and the GPU fans got really loud. I know for a fact that the it is just the gpu fans because when I physically stop them my computer goes back to being its silent self. Thinking that it was just asleep, I tried to wake it up. No success. This has been occurring about twice a week at random since then. I know it is just the GPU because when I'm in a skype call, or listening to music, I can still hear the audio output from the computer into the speakers. The computer is also responsive, because it will make the normal system sounds you get when you press random keyboard keys. I talked to the people at the hardware store and they said they'd need to test it to confirm I'm not lying. HERE'S THE PROBLEM: The GPU runs fine under stress. 4 hour Furmark test confirmed that. The screens just go black and the GPU fans get loud at random. There has not been a single BSoD

WHAT I'VE TRIED:

-Unplugging it and plugging it back in

-Driver update

-Older driver install (problem occurred both with Crimson and whatever driver there was before it)

I'm afraid that if I have the hardware store check it out, they wont find the problem, and I'll just end up looking like a conniving asshole trying to take advantage of their "equal or better value if outdated" deal to get a newer AMD card.

BY THE WAY: The card is an XFX R9 290 Black Edition

Thanks for the help

I really want to build an oil-immersed PC  ^_^

Specs?

Its on my account.

MB: M5a99fx PRO R2.0

PSU: EVGA 750G2 750 watts

CPU: FX-8370

Samsung 850 evo ssd

some 3 TB hard drive I took out of an un opened external storage unit

GPU r9 290 black edition from xfx

those are the only specs I can imagine really matter. That being said I'm near positive its the GPU and nothing else. The computer is still responsive when the screens go black.

Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

Look for any errors relevant to display/graphics etc. This would imply a driver problem.

The card is unlikely to be damaged unless you've overclocked it/been running it at very high temperatures over a long period of time.

Just to clarify, when you say the screen goes black, is the screen still on, but black (can you see the backlight?) - or does the monitor actually go off into standby?

Perhaps try Furmark again for a longer period of time, what kind of temperatures does it hit at full throttle?

Almost as cool as my temps

Try using DDU (from Guru3D) and then reinstalling the drivers. That way there is nothing left from a previous installation.

The screen is still on. Standby is not initiated until the normal amount of time in which it takes for my PC to go to sleep after not being used. Also in furmark the GPU hits around 60 - 67 Celsius. Never more than 67.

When it happens, get your phone and make a video showing the system, the card and the screen and the sounds you can make.

It's better than having nothing to show them...

I had black screens with 7...YES 7x 290's from Gigabyte (happened in other machines too)

RMA'd every time.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Both, had a 12 months return to store and 3 years with Gigabyte.

I made a PRIVATE Youtube video so I could put that in the email to Gigabyte, the store didn't even care, and they dont even have a machine to test it so they always just send it away every time...

The whole process was fast each time (3-5 weeks), but each time the return card would end up the same...(or similar, black screen, BSOD on idle, but not in load) Among some other issues and still tried all the talked about fix's...

Within 2-3 years I only had 6 months of play from my 290's, the rest of the time was waiting for RMA send/returns.

With my warranty, the card would be replaced with a 390 because the 290 is outdated. Do you think they'd find this problem with testing?

With the random nature, likely not unless they kept it for longer.

I've had a returned card,.... saying its "working fine" and had "no issues".....and that SAME day it blackscreened.

It's beyond frustrating.

I can imagine. I am going to try what @byalexandr suggested and if that fails I will bring in the card with my video evidence that I've been collecting over the weeks. Thank you for the help and understanding :)
